QUEER MUSIC SOCIAL hosts its inaugural event in downtown Toronto with some the city’s top Queer artists, including JUNO nominated Tafari Anthony, Michelle Mondesir, IAMREBELWILL and Cory Stewart

TORONTO, ON (January 5, 2023) – Toronto’s music scene is gaining a new outlet for Queer musicians come January 26, 2023 with the inaugural QUEER MUSIC SOCIAL presented by pop musician Cory Stewart. Featuring a lineup of some of the city’s top Queer talent including Michelle Mondesir, IAMREBELWILL, Tafari Anthony and Stewart, QUEER MUSIC SOCIAL will provide a platform outside of Pride celebrations for Queer musicians to be seen, heard and celebrated.

With 92% of LGBT consumers considering themselves passionate music fans (GLAAD, 2016), QUEER MUSIC SOCIAL fills a big void in the Toronto Queer music community. Taking place in the Queer owned and operated new west end hot spot Boombox Toronto (647 College Street), the evening promises to be a community-building extravaganza for both performers and attendees alike.

QUEER MUSIC SOCIAL initially began in 2020 as an online artist community, in which Cory Stewart hosted special guests such as music PR expert Eric Alper and 604 Records (Marianas Trench, Carly Rae Jepsen) President Jonathan Simkin for Q&A style sessions. The monthly event provided an opportunity for 2SLGBTQIA+ indie artists to get a peek behind the curtain of the music industry through an intimate and informal chat with numerous industry experts.

“Both being Queer and trying to navigate the music industry can make a person feel very isolated. The vision with QUEER MUSIC SOCIAL is to provide a safe space for 2SLGBTQIA+ artists and music fans to connect and feel a sense of community – all while enjoying some of the best artistry our city has to offer,” says Cory Stewart. “As wonderful as Pride celebrations are, there are few platforms servicing the needs of our community the other 11 months of the year and my hope is that this may provide a solution to that problem.”

Tickets for QUEER MUSIC SOCIAL ($15 advance, $20 door) are now on sale at www.queermusicsocial.com.

About Cory Stewart:

Cory Stewart (AWAL/Kobalt) has been described as a wickedly witty pop artist with “smooth voice” (Billboard, 2020) that creates “fearless, unapologetic and relentlessly catchy” music (Canadian Beats, 2018). Cory has been a supporting act for a number of legendary artists including Boy George and Crystal Waters. Stewart’s debut album ‘TOV’ was released in January 2021, hitting #9 on the iTunes Pop Charts and receiving overwhelming praise from critics.

Stewart recently completed the seven-city QUEERANTINE Tour across the United States, for which he received a 2022 Wavy Award. He is about to release a new EP entitled “SH/EETS” which will hit all streaming platforms on January 27, 2023.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Tafari Anthony

Tafari (pronounced Ta-far-eye) Anthony is a JUNO nominated artist whose music blends pop, soul and alternative. Known for his sleek vocal tones, sultry melodies and music which oozes with personality, Tafari leaves listeners in awe – somewhat apt considering his name means “He who inspires awe”.

Tafari has spent much of his career working behind the scenes with various artists. He has written and vocal produced for Juno nominated artists (Tanika Charles, Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar), and Drag Race royalty (Priyanka, Katya) among others. His authentically humble but powerful performance style has kept him as an in-demand vocalist throughout the country, allowing him to have toured through Europe, Canada, the United States, and even a stint in South Korea.

Tafari has seen success with his music garnering acclaim from the likes of PAPER Magazine, Billboard, Gay Times, Earmilk and MTV to name a few. His latest EP “The Way You See Me” was released to critical acclaim from PAPER Magazine & Billboard in November 2020 & nominated for a 2022 JUNO Award for Adult Contemporary Album of The Year.

Michelle Mondesir

Michelle Mondesir has always had a passion for music. She is a singer, songwriter, pianist and producer but also the CEO of the recording studio Poetic Groove Productions.

Her accomplishments over the past 10 years is quite impressive as she’s been nominated and won a number of awards.

Though currently fronting the indie alt-rock band Madame Psychosis which has produced two successful albums, she also released 17 solo R&B songs in 2019.

Michelle released “Give Me All Your Lovin’” on Nov 1st, which BuzzMusic refers to as “a few minutes of musical bliss and delicacy” and EARMILK says that “(Michelle) has a natural talent for crafting soul- gripping musical arrangements”. More recently, Michelle released “Sunday Sun” on Dec 9th, which BuzzMusic calls “a song of hope and love” and says “the vocal performance is absolutely flawless.” Furthermore Reignland says, “The song consists of soulful vocals over a hip hop undertone and beautiful harmonies that add fire to the already outstanding song.”

2020 proved to be a difficult and frustrating year but also inspired Michelle to write “Crazy World” released on June 25th, which She Makes Music describes as “honest and inspirational”. Later Michelle featured Toronto-based artist pHoenix Pagliacci of TRP.P on her single “Look What You Started.”

Most recently Michelle teamed up with Cory Stewart on his debut album “TOV” (released Jan 22 2021) for the uptempo pop track “End of Me” which Metro Weekly refers to as “a showstopper of a dance track” and UK-based Culture Fix calls “a dreamy and intoxicating number that ponders how a relationship can deteriorate…[that is] ethereal and emotive”.

Michelle looks forward to working with Madame Psychosis on their third studio album as well as continued R&B work.

IAMREBELWILL

Born and raised in bilingual Montreal, Toronto-based pop entertainer, IAMREBELWILL is influenced by the showmanship of Janet Jackson, the eclectic artistry of Andre 3000 and the vibes and feels of Kaytranada.

His EP RebelFuturism, the artist is using his voice to challenge the stereotypical perspective in mainstream pop music and help empower the underrepresented LGTBQ+ and POC community to be fearlessly themselves. RebelFuturism, is seductive, contemporary pop, soaked in the neon bleached nightclub vibes of house bass-lines, infused with irresistible pop hooks and melodies. “It’s a soundtrack for modernity, addressing sexuality, sexual fluidity, identity and equality,” says Rebel. “As a proud queer black man I wanted to create something that gave a voice to my experience and a voice to folks whose stories the majority of time are not told.”

Queer Toronto-based artist offers an impressive 46-minute album debut delivered in three distinctive (and catchy) acts

TORONTO, ON (January 12, 2021) - On January 22, 2021, Toronto-based pop artist Cory Stewart drops his 17-track debut album ‘TOV’, a musical journey broken into three acts: betrayal, heartbreak and survival. Meticulously crafted over three years by Stewart and award-winning Canadian producer Gavin Bradley: ‘TOV’ was named after one of Cory’s life-long friends, Tovah Natalie, who passed away from cancer during the 2020 pandemic. ‘TOV’ is the follow-up to Stewart’s EP ’7 Different Sides’, which led to him opening for Boy George and the Culture Club in 2018.

The album will be released under label Embrace Disruption (in partnership with AWAL/Kobalt) and features an all-star list of LGBTQ+ indie musicians, contributors and collaborators including Gavin Bradley, Jxckson, Kisos, MDL CHLD, Michelle Mondesir (of Madame Psychosis) and Zach Benson.

Pulling from influences in Stewart’s musical career, including the dance elements of Madonna and Kylie Minogue, the humour of Bette Midler, and the drama of Phantom of the Opera, Stewart hopes ‘TOV’ will be more than just a collection of songs, but a story of resilience and strength – geared to be experienced in full album form.

“Listening to an album from top to bottom is a lost pleasure these days,” says Stewart. “When writing songs for ‘TOV’, I worked closely with Gavin (Bradley) to make sure we told a story — one that could only be fully understood by listening in full; while also ensuring that each song carries its own individual narrative.”

Tracks like ‘What If’, ‘Poison’ (feat. MDL CHLD) and ‘End of Me’ (feat. Michelle Mondesir) explore themes of betrayal (both self-inflicted and external) through a dance floor beat, while ‘Happiness in Heartache’, ‘Little Lies’ and ‘Do You’ examine the complexities of heartbreak, through several perspectives. Followed by ’Grab the Fire’ (feat. Jxckson), ‘No More Trips to London’ (featuring background vocals from Stewart’s mother, written about the loss of his grandmother), ‘Unhappy’ and ‘Little One’ (written and recorded for the album’s namesake Tovah – and played for her the night she passed), which deal with the pain of loss, and the struggle of survival. The album is also seasoned with tracks like ’Tu·mul·tu·ous Situation’, ‘Cut Those **** off’ and ‘Maybe I’m Insane’ which act as story-telling interstitials throughout the project’s 46-minute runtime.

More about Ethan

On June 1st, 2018, little Ethan was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The past few months have been a difficult time for both Ethan and his family, but they are very much looking forward to taking a break from treatment to enjoy their 3-Minute Dash! A fan of building and creating things, Ethan can’t wait to pick up some new Lego sets and PAW Patrol figurines.

The 3-Minute Dash program is donated by Toys”R”Us, Canada as part of their long-standing partnership with Starlight Canada and has been expanded to gift over 10 Canadian families with shopping sprees in Ottawa, Barrie and Toronto in Ontario; Langley and Kamloops in British Columbia; Edmonton, Alberta; Pembina, Manitoba; Regina, Saskatchewan; Laval and Lasalle in Montreal and St. John’s, Newfoundland. For the past five years, dash recipients have been randomly selected as part of an internal Starlight Canada contest, in which families are asked to share the details of their child’s care journey and submit them to their local Starlight programs coordinator for entry.

“On a day-to-day basis, we witness the bravery, strength and struggles that seriously ill children and their families face,” says Starlight executive director, Brian Bringolf. “Throughout the course of the calendar year, Starlight aims to provide distractive programming to make children smile and help families cope. We are beyond thrilled to have generous partners in Toys”R”Us and Babies”R”Us, who have helped us create initiatives like the 3-Minute Dash for our very deserving Starlight families.”

Over the past 20 years, Toys”R”Us and Babies”R”Us Canada have been and continue to be one of Starlight’s most involved and valued partners. Through in-store and online campaigns, 3-Minute Dashes, Presenting Sponsor of the Starlight Gala and donations to in and out-of-hospital programs, they have donated an incredible $19 million to Starlight and are extraordinary advocates of Starlight’s cause.

“We are proud to partner with Starlight and are delighted to bring 13 Starlight Dashes to communities across Canada this year,” says Melanie Teed-Murch, President, Toys”R”Us Canada. “At Toys”R”Us Canada, we believe that play is a right and we will champion the power of play for children across the country. Play inspires endless possibilities of fun, imagination and wonder and for the families who take part in the shopping sprees, the Dashes offer their children much needed moments of playful escape on their journey.”

This year, in addition to the 3-Minute Dash, Toys”R“Us has made a commitment to sponsor several Starlight Canada initiatives including:

85 Hospital Grants - Monetary funding to support distractive entertainment for hospitalized children.

10,500 ER Admit Kits - A variety of care products for children and parents during unexpected hospital stays.

7,000 Baby & Toddler Fun Kits - Cuddly toys and games to distract very young children during unpleasant hospital stays.

Baby Resources for Hospitals Program – Supplying easy to sanitize crib mobiles and activity centersalong with special infant seats to cover 100 Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) and Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICU) across Canada.

More about Sam

Little Sam first became ill right before his eighth birthday last year. He’s had months of difficult treatment to endure, including tough medications and dreaded needles; but can still be found with a big smile on his face. A big fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Star Wars, Sam sets his eyes on not only toys for himself, but plans to pick up a few extra toys to share with children in need. With his ninth birthday having just passed, Sam is poised to have a very memorable birthday this year, this time outside of the hospital.

The 3-Minute Dash program (now in its fourth successful year) is donated by Toys“R”Us as part of their long standing partnership with Starlight and will take place in eight cities across the nation this fall: Ottawa, Montreal, St. John’s, Langley, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto and Winnipeg. Each dash recipient was randomly selected as part of a contest Starlight held earlier this summer, in which families were asked to share the details of their child’s care journey and submit them to their local Starlight Programs Coordinator for entry.

“At Starlight, we see first-hand the daily struggles and challenges Canadian families face when caring for their seriously ill child,” says Starlight Executive Director, Brian Bringolf. “Programs like the 3-Minute Dash are at the heart of our organization, providing us with the unique chance to bring welcome distraction and a genuine smile to the faces of deserving children like Lily.”

Over the past 19 years, Toys“R”Us and Babies“R”Us continues to be one of Starlight’s most involved and valuable partners. Through in-store and online campaigns, 3-Minute Dashes, their Starlight Gala event sponsorship, and donations to in-hospital, neonatal care and out-of-hospital programs, they have donated an incredible $17 million to Starlight and have been extraordinary advocates in the community about Starlight’s work.

“Hope and laughter, entertainment and distraction, comfort and support are an integral part of the circle of care and make a real difference to the quality of a seriously ill child’s life. We hope our event brings Lily and her family much fun and excitement as our team members proudly welcome them to our Winnipeg Dash!” says Mary Hewton, VP Human Resources and Customer Relations for Toys“R”Us, Canada.

More about Lily

On November 21, 2016, Lily was diagnosed with very high risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Up until then, Lily was a completely healthy child, making the diagnosis an absolute shock to her and her family. Lily’s journey has been filled with many hours, days and weeks at the hospital, whether in cancer care, or in the CK-5 at the Children’s Hospital of Winnipeg. Despite all of her recent struggles, Lily finds ways to smile by enjoying activities like drawing, swimming, baking and singing. Lily will be celebrating her eighth birthday on October 1, making her upcoming dash an even more exciting event for her and her family.

From prematurity, reflux, Spastic Quadriplegia Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy resulting in prolonged seizures up to 90 minutes, respiratory syncytial virus, numerous tests, hospitalizations and countless hours of therapy, Lucas has struggled through many challenges in his early life. Despite what he has had to overcome, Lucas always focuses on what he can do, rather than what he can’t. Lucas loves being around people and brightens his days by enjoying music, dancing and crafts. A big fan of the song “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)”, Lucas also enjoys watching anything with exciting dance choreography!

CALGARY, AB (August 30, 2017) - After being diagnosed with Hollow Visceral Myopathy, a digestive disorder where the intestines are unable to contract normally and push food through the digestive system, it’s safe to say that Calgary-based Starlight child Oliver’s early life has had some challenges.
Starlight Children’s Foundation™ Canada along with partner Toys”R”Us, Canada to provide eight Canadian families with a fun-filled escape away from the hospital, and their daily struggles with illness this fall.

OTTAWA, ON (August 22, 2017) - After being diagnosed with leukemia at the age of six, it’s safe to say that Ottawa-based Starlight child Gabriel’s early life has had some challenges. From countless hospital stays to times of complete isolation during treatment, Gabriel (now 11 years old) has missed out on many opportunities to enjoy just being a kid. This year, in an effort to provide Gabriel with a chance to create much-needed positive memories away from the hospital, Toys”R”Us, Canada in partnership with Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada will be gifting him with a 3-Minute Dash through the Toys“R”Us store located at 3742 Innes Road, Orleans, Ontario. On Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at 7:00 a.m., Gabriel and his family will have the chance to race through the store to fill their shopping carts with as many free toys as possible within the three minute timeframe.

“Programs like the 3-Minute Dash are at the heart of our organization, providing us with the unique chance to bring welcome distraction and a genuine smile to the faces of deserving children like Gabriel.”

We hope our event brings Gabriel and his family much fun and excitement as our team members proudly welcome them to our Ottawa Dash!” says Mary Hewton, VP Human Resources and Customer Relations for Toys“R”Us, Canada.

More about Gabriel

Gabriel was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at the age of 6, a time when boys are adventurous, curious and very active. His stays at the hospital were often difficult and, at times, prevented him from even being allowed outdoors or in public places. Gabo, a nickname lovingly bestowed by his family, enjoys creating his own worlds with Lego and can’t get enough of both Star Wars and the Cars series. An enthusiastic Ottawa Senators fan, Gabo loves both hockey and soccer, but also finds joy in playing his guitar. At the time of Gabriel’s 3-Minute Dash, he will be approaching his twelfth birthday, making the upcoming experience even more exciting for both him and his family.

This year, in addition to the 3-Minute Dash, Toys“R”Us has also helped sponsor:

85 Hospital Grants – Monetary funding to support distractive entertainment for hospitalized children.

10,500 ER Admit Kits – A variety of care products for children and parents during unexpected hospital stays.

7,000 Baby & Toddler Fun Kits – Cuddly toys and games to distract very young children during unpleasant hospital stays.

100 Starlight Treasure Chests – A box filled with toys and surprises, used by children during appointments at the hospital or clinic.

Baby Resources for Hospitals Program – Supplying easy to sanitize crib mobiles and activity centers along with special infant seats to cover 100 Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) and Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICU) across Canada.

First Nations Resource Program – A pilot project distributing 900 books and literature promoting Native and Inuit culture to pediatric hospitals serving the First Nations Community.

“Kidcrew was carefully developed as a stress free, one stop, head to toe solution for children’s health care,” says Dr. Dina Kulik, owner Kidcrew. “Knowing that many households require harmonized medical attention beyond a general pediatrician, we provide parents with a collaborative, team-based approach to kids health.”

TORONTO, ON (May 23, 2017) – On the evening of Tuesday, June 20, 2017, thousands of LGBTTIQQ2S+ community members will remember, honour and celebrate those who have passed from AIDS or AIDS related illnesses, or have given their lives in the fight against HIV/AIDS at the 33rd annual Toronto AIDS Candlelight Vigil held in Barbara Hall Park (519 Church Street, Toronto) at 9:00 p.m.

“As we continue the fight against HIV/AIDS, this open community event provides an opportunity to recognize and honour the millions of lives that have been impacted, along with those that have been affected by this disease, including caregivers, friends, lovers, family members or social workers,” says Steven Hobé, AIDS Vigil Committee of Toronto Co-Chair. “With this year’s theme of “In The Spirit of Wellness and Healing”, we aim to shed light on the struggles the indigenous community faces with HIV/AIDS in Canada.”

In 2014, Canadian indigenous people were 2.7 times more likely to contract HIV compared to other ethnicities. Leonard Benoit, Client Care Coordinator in the Indigenous Community, adds “This year’s theme speaks to community: it acknowledges that we leave no one behind.”

The evening will be hosted by Leonard Benoit and Louise Binder, and will include performances from FORTE Toronto Gay Men’s Chorus, Ballet Creole, Francois Gallant and Bernice Chan. The event will close with a reading of the names of those who have passed from HIV/AIDS or AIDS related illnesses, followed by a candle lighting ceremony.

Benoit, who holds registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse, works as a Client Care Coordinator in the Indigenous Community, where he provides a variety of services to those that have or are affected by HIV/AIDS. Binder, a lawyer and health advocate, started her work in this area in the HIV community in the early 1990s after her own diagnosis and before effective treatments were available for HIV. Binder also co-founded the Canadian Treatment Action Council (CTAC) in 1996, which successfully ensured access to treatments and quality care for people living with HIV by working with the federal and provincial governments and other relevant stakeholders to enhance drug review and approval systems, pricing policies and access to liver transplants for this community.

The names read prior to the candle lighting ceremony will be engraved on the long-standing AIDS Memorial in the heart of Barbara Hall Park.

Top raw foods chef Heather Pace shares nutrient-rich food ingredients for improving overall health and well-being.

TORONTO, ON (February 16, 2017) - March 1st, 2017 marks the beginning of National Nutrition Month, a 30+ year old campaign designed to focus on bettering food choices and developing improved eating and physical activity habits for Canadians. According to StatCan in 2014, 20.8% of Canadians over 18 were classified as obese, with poor eating choices acting as a major contributor. To help incorporate more nutrient-based items into Canadian diets, Victoria-based raw foods chef Heather Pace shares five lesser-known ingredients that pack flavour and function into everyday recipes.

1. Maca

With over 20 amino acids (including eight essential amino acids), this South American root (also known as Peruvian ginseng) is great for libido, fertility, memory, focus, and energy. Known as an adaptogen, this root helps with the body’s response to stress. It can be purchased in powdered form and has a pleasant malty taste that can be used in desserts, smoothies and other drinks.

2. Turmeric

Most famously known for its anti-inflammatory properties and high iron content, this spice from the ginger family also helps balance blood sugar and loosen stiff joints. Turmeric is commonly used in curry powder and has a strong taste, but can be added to most soups, dips, salad dressings, tea, smoothies, and even desserts. It can be used fresh or in powdered form.

3. Avocado oil

Dubbed “the healthiest new oil” for its lack of cholesterol, trans fats and high content of vitamin E, avocado oil comes from the fruit flesh, rather than the seed like most oils. Avocado oil assists the body in absorbing important nutrients and has been found to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Because of its neutral flavour, avocado oil is a great option for salad dressings, dips, baking and cooking.

4. Chaga

High in antioxidants, minerals, vitamins B, K and D, the chaga mushroom grows on birch trees in Canada, Northern United States and Russia. A source for natural energy, chaga can be made into a tea that has vanilla and maple properties to it. Chaga can also be added to smoothies or used in desserts like cheesecakes, puddings and pies.

5. Hibiscus tea

High in vitamin C and iron, hibiscus is a tropical flower with a tangy, cranberry-like flavour. Also high in antioxidants and an abundance of minerals, hibiscus helps to boost immunity, decrease inflammation, and works as a natural diuretic. In its dried form, the flower can be used in a variety of smoothies and desserts like this lemon hibiscus raspberry cheesecake!

Incorporate some of these ingredients together in a delicious raw chocolate superfood shake formulated by Pace with a recipe found below. To find out more about Heather Pace and her raw food creations, please visit http://www.sweetlyraw.com.

TORONTO, ON (November 23, 2016) – On Saturday, November 19, 2016, over 250 members and allies of the LGBTTIQQ2S community filled Toronto’s award-winning Integral House to enjoy an evening of celebration and performances in support of Community One Foundation. Hosted by Canadian comedian Carla Collins and sponsored by RBC and Team PK, the evening was a decadent affair, complemented by custom Bar Chef cocktails and gourmet delights.

VIP guests arrived at 6:30 p.m. and were treated to an exclusive tour of Integral House by Brigitte Shim of Shim-Sutcliffe Architects, along with performances by the world-renowned Opera Atelier. At 7:30 p.m., the event opened to the public and showcased a variety of performances from Community One Foundation Rainbow Grant recipient Tessa Goodon and popular Toronto drag artists Sofonda Cox and Donnarama.

In addition, the foundation awarded the winner of their annual Steinert & Ferreiro Award, Canada’s largest single cash award in recognition of leadership in the LGBTTIQQ2S community, to Toronto-based advocate Doug Kerr. Kerr was chosen for his commitment to volunteerism, social activism along with his steadfast ability to drive collaboration across a multitude of initiatives in both a Toronto and global context.

“Our foundation’s main objective is to support and foster growth throughout LGBTTIQQ2S communities in the greater Toronto area,” says Community One Foundation co-chair Terry Greene. “Events like these help us spotlight the amazing individuals and initiatives that we continue to recognize with grants and awards throughout the calendar year.”

Community One Foundation is one of many charitable organizations that Integral House’s builder James Stewart (late mathematician and textbook magnate) has donated proceeds to. A longtime LGBT activist, Stewart planted roots in the community by inviting “gay rights activist George Hislop to speak at McMaster in the early 1970s, when the LGBT liberation movement was in its infancy, and was involved in protests and demonstrations until mathematics began to dominate his life.” (Daily Xtra, 2014).

TORONTO, ON - As the summer days draw to a close, National Lazy Day (Wednesday, August 10, 2016) is one of the last chances for many to embrace their inner sloth and spend time relaxing in the seasonal heat. With the inevitable change of pace looming, Urbery, Toronto’s most personalized alcohol and grocery delivery service, has compiled a list of five dreaded tasks and paired them with online tools that will help Torontonians free up their time to enjoy the upcoming holiday.

Walking the dog: As many pet owners know, most days start with a walk around the block with man’s best friend. GoFetch (available on iPhone) can be described as the Uber of dog walking, allowing users to hire nearby (pre-screened) dog walkers in increments of 15 minutes, 30 minutes or an hour at prices as low as $10.

Getting groceries: From lifting to line ups, grocery store shopping can be a real pain — particularly for city dwellers without a car. Urbery (available on web, iPhone or Android) is the solution, offering customers the chance to order two hour delivery from many of their favourite grocery stores (Whole Foods, Loblaws and Sobeys), pharmacies (Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall), and liquor stores (LCBO and Beer Store). Urbery also offers real-time tracking and interaction with personal shoppers (Grocery Gurus) to ensure all products are hand picked and delivered the way the customer wants, along with a 100% freshness guarantee.

Getting ready: Any busy mother or working professional will agree that getting ready for an evening out or a special event can be a time consuming task. beGlammed (available on web, iPhone or Android) aims to make this process easier with on-demand hair and makeup artists that will come directly to your home or hotel room to prepare you for your special function. With women spending an average of 55 minutes a day on their appearance, this tool is a welcome time-saver on those extra-busy (or lazy) days.

Cleaning the house: The lazy person’s dream is to never have to clean the house again. Handy (available on web, iPhone or Android) strives to make this dream a reality with their professional cleaners and handy-people who will clean the house, assemble ikea furniture, paint, and even help you move. This service requires next-day booking, so make sure to plan ahead for National Lazy Day!

Doing the laundry: Washing, folding and taking items to the dry cleaner’s are a thing of the past with Simply Laundry (available on web). This service aims to streamline your life by picking up all of your dirty clothes from your front door or concierge, and returns them to you at the time of your choosing. With wash and fold plans starting at as low as $1.92 a pound, Simply Laundry is one of the most affordable ways to avoid the tedious chore of doing your laundry.

Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives (CLGA) will examine LGBTQ+ censorship, resulting from the “Hays Code,” in an exhibit compiled of silver screen films and memorabilia.

TORONTO, ON. (January 27, 2015) – Sissy stereotypes, same-sex interaction and subtext will all come to the forefront in the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives’ new exhibition, Code, Read. Code, Read will see the CLGA’s gallery present four film screenings, along with a collection of film ephemera from 1930 to 1968. This free exhibit is open to the general public beginning February 8, 2015 at the CLGA (34 Isabella St., Toronto).

As films of the 1920s and 30s grew more sophisticated, and as Depression-era audiences dwindled, there was increasing demand for more controversial characters. The hitherto harmless sissy was offset both by more complex queer figures and by more scandalous stereotypes. Debates subsequently arose about the negative effect that Hollywood cinema, and its questionable morals, might have upon society as a whole.

In response, the Motion Picture Production Code, or Hays Code, put in place a series of censorship guidelines by which the production of indecent or immoral filmic content would be restricted. The institution of the Hays Code heralded the end of the sissy – and his more complex counterparts – in popular cinema, and the beginning of more reserved queer characters whose true nature was necessarily buried by subtext and innuendo. Between 1930 and 1968, a span that encompassed Hollywood’s Golden Age of film production, queer characters were either obscured through ambiguity or else written out entirely from Hollywood films. Alternatively, since the Hays Code was willing to allow “sexual perversion” if depicted in a negative light, queer characters who remained in the picture were presented as a series of unflattering stereotypes: murderous villains, suicidal misfits, farcical fairies, or sexual rebels in need of reform.

“The CLGA is proud to welcome audiences to explore an important and highly formative part of cinematic and popular history through this part-exhibition, part-mini film fest. The content of screens – film, TV, the Internet – has been a persistent subject of social debate, with LGBTQ lives and stories frequently taking leading roles,” says CLGA vice president Wil Craddock. “Antagonistic ideals around issues of morality and decency have often demonized LGBTQ representations, pushing for their censorship or promoting the picturing of negative attributes and story lines around queer people. These films offer a compelling (and rare) glimpse into the early queer heyday and subsequent queerphobia of early Hollywood. They comprise a fascinating part of historical mainstream perceptions of LGBTQ people.”

Public can attend Code, Read screenings at the following dates and times. Please note seating is limited and first-come, first-served:

Toronto, ON (January 13, 2015) – Did you know: Saturday, January 17, 2015 is officially deemed “Ditch Your New Year’s Resolutions Day”? With just 8% of people actually achieving their yearly resolutions (Statistic Brain, 2014), Helpling.com, a web-based platform for booking home cleaning services, is providing five easy online tools that can help you curb the urge to ditch your newly-made personal vows.

“Most people start the New Year with good intentions, but after returning from holidays and getting back into the busyness of life, resolutions have a tendency to be forgotten. A lot of people don’t even bother making resolutions because they don’t think they can maintain them,” says Helpling.com managing director Blake Connoy. “With the growing ability to manage our lifestyles online, the Helpling team has five simple online tools that you can use to help keep your resolutions on track.”

Helpling.com offers the following to ensure Torontonians stick to their goals over the next 12 months:

5 Online Tools To Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions

1. Stick To A Healthy Diet: Eating better is on everyone’s agenda in the New Year. Nowadays, you don’t need to resort to ordering a greasy pizza online, as there are plenty of home delivery services that send healthy fresh-made food to your door. Not only is this a great way to better your eating habits, but it also takes the guess work and effort out of planning healthy meals. Some examples of Toronto-based delivery services include fresh food from ChefsPlate.com and EssentialMealDelivery.com, which allow you to follow a meal plan based on your lifestyle.

2. Keep Your Home Clean: A recent survey conducted by Helpling.com revealed that Torontonians want clean homes, but only 5% actually enjoy cleaning. Get a fresh, clean start to your 2015 by usingHelpling.com to take care of the dirty work. Helpling allows you to book a local, experienced, and insured cleaner in just a few clicks for just $25 an hour – taking the stress out of keeping up with your cleaning in the New Year.

3. Keep Fit: While you may vow to go to the gym in the New Year, it doesn’t always happen. There are some amazing apps that allow you to track and keep up with a fitness routine at your own pace, in the comfort of your home. Some of these include: Human (an app that encourages you to get your 30 minutes of activity each day) and Instant Fitness (an app that provides easy workouts for you to do anywhere).

4. Save More Money: Tracking your money can be a real bore, but with sites like Mint.com, you’re able to set budgets, analyze your spending (how much you’ve spent on entertainment, food, etc. each week), and get a hold on where you should scale back — all without having to sort through your monthly bank statements.

5. Learn Something New: Improving your skills and furthering your knowledge (whether for work or for personal growth) is another popular resolution. Learning company Lynda.com allows you to select online courses that you can complete at your own pace from home. Whether web design, photography, business, software or creative skills, there are tutorials available online for you to increase your learning in the New Year.

Each week at Embrace Disruption we introduce you to an influential person in the digital, blogger, arts, culture, film, or media world! Every Thursday, you can check back at EDPR to find out who we think is particularly amazing at ‘embracing disruption’ within their respective industries.

This week, we’d like to introduce you to Judy Inc’s Fashion Stylist to the Stars, Tiffany Briseno!

What’s your official job title and where did you go to school?

I studied Fashion Design at George Brown College and then Ryerson University. I am currently a Wardrobe Stylist with Judy Inc.

Describe yourself in a nutshell (or sea shell, or any shell for that matter).

Creatively Conscious, art obssesed, dancer turned fashion aficionado.

Why did you pursue what you’re doing now? What was the inspiration?

From a young age I would watch my mom as model work with designers and other industry pros. My grandmother was also involved in the industry before that. She was a costume designer and dance choreographer in the late 70’s to mid 80‘s. I was always drawn to the fashion industry I just didn’t know to what capacity. After graduating I briefly interned at Plutino Grp and was further exposed to the many facets of the beauty making industry. After meeting the many artists that would come visit the agency and constantly reviewing their inspirational portfolios I knew I wanted to jump into the ring as a taste maker

What is the best part of your day-to-day?

The best part of my day-to-day is “living the dream” as they say. Making a living from something you love to do.

What’s the most challenging?

It’s been a challenge to find a good balance of both work and life. At times I get lost in the creative vortex of my job and it becomes difficult to not take on more projects.

If you took a look in the cliché crystal ball, what do you see for yourself?

I see myself expanding my reach overseas on a more frequent basis.

How do you embrace disruption in your work and personal life?

Yoga…Dance…and shaking off the unnecessary.

What is the most memorable moment in your career?

One of the most memorable moments is when I was one of the top ten finalist for the Nuit Blanche Design Competition.

Tell us what you see yourself doing at 65 years old.

I would like to have opened a non-profit art school in Mexico. I think that giving kids a chance to develop something they are passionate about will give them valuable tools for their future.

Just for fun: if you had to pick one app in the whole APPVERSE, what would it be?

Shazam!!! Always love discovering new artists and new music.

We recently had a chance to watch Tiffany work her magic for one of our clients, the lovely Stacey McKenzie, at a shoot for City Life Magazine. Be sure to follow Tiffany on Twitter and pick up the issue when it comes out in August. Check out some candid shots from the day (below).
