Five year old Starlight child Sloan created this year’s 9th collectible bear, available in-store and online through Toys“R”Us and Babies“R”Us Canada

TORONTO, ON (October 26, 2017) – Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada in collaboration with Toys”R”Us, Canada has released their 9th Limited Edition Collectible Starlight Bear, designed and named after five year old Starlight child Sloan. The bear is now available both online and in-store at Toys”R”Us and Babies”R”Us stores across the nation. A portion of the Sloan bear’s sales will go towards funding Starlight Canada’s in and out-of-hospital programming, which aims to brighten the lives of seriously ill children across the country.

Since birth, bear designer Sloan has been treated for gastrointestinal motility disorder. This illness will affect her large intestine (colon) for her entire life and will require a series of major surgeries that will deeply impact her quality of living. Her 14 year old sister Abby, who lives with the same illness, has had to endure 15 surgeries, including a stoma surgically created for antegrade enemas. Despite her condition, Sloan’s cheerful and animated personality has helped her to overcome any challenges in her path.

In designing the bear, Sloan was inspired by her love of everything purple and the comforting feeling of hugging something soft and cozy. The butterfly on the bear’s foot represents the magic Sloan finds within herself to spread her wings and soar above the obstacles she faces every day.

From countless hospital stays to times of complete isolation during treatment, Lily (now seven years old) has missed out on many opportunities to enjoy just being a kid. This year, in an effort to provide Lily with a chance to create much-needed positive memories away from the hospital, Toys”R”Us, Canada in partnership with Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada will be gifting her with a 3-Minute Dash through the Toys“R”Us store located at 1560 Regent Ave. W., Winnipeg, MB. On Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at 7:00 a.m., Lily and her family will have the chance to race through the store to fill their shopping carts with as many free toys as possible within the three minute timeframe.

The 3-Minute Dash program (now in its fourth successful year) is donated by Toys“R”Us as part of their long standing partnership with Starlight and will take place in eight cities across the nation this fall: Ottawa, Montreal, St. John’s, Langley, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto and Winnipeg. Each dash recipient was randomly selected as part of a contest Starlight held earlier this summer, in which families were asked to share the details of their child’s care journey and submit them to their local Starlight Programs Coordinator for entry.

On November 21, 2016, Lily was diagnosed with very high risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Up until then, Lily was a completely healthy child, making the diagnosis an absolute shock to her and her family. Lily’s journey has been filled with many hours, days and weeks at the hospital, whether in cancer care, or in the CK-5 at the Children’s Hospital of Winnipeg. Despite all of her recent struggles, Lily finds ways to smile by enjoying activities like drawing, swimming, baking and singing. Lily will be celebrating her eighth birthday on October 1, making her upcoming dash an even more exciting event for her and her family.

More about Gabriel

Gabriel was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at the age of 6, a time when boys are adventurous, curious and very active. His stays at the hospital were often difficult and, at times, prevented him from even being allowed outdoors or in public places. Gabo, a nickname lovingly bestowed by his family, enjoys creating his own worlds with Lego and can’t get enough of both Star Wars and the Cars series. An enthusiastic Ottawa Senators fan, Gabo loves both hockey and soccer, but also finds joy in playing his guitar. At the time of Gabriel’s 3-Minute Dash, he will be approaching his twelfth birthday, making the upcoming experience even more exciting for both him and his family.

TORONTO, ON (December 1, 2015)– Just in time for the holidays, Bouclair, in partnership with Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada, has launched a brand new fundraising campaign in-stores, highlighting #OscarTheNutcracker, a chic $2.00 holiday decoration fit for any home. The campaign, which runs until December 22, 2015, allows Bouclair customers to purchase Oscar in-store for two dollars, with all proceeds going directly to Starlight Canada.

In addition to selling Oscar, Bouclair has also launched an online contest which encourages #OscarTheNutcracker owners to snap a photo of their purchase in a creative and original setting and share their photos on social media. After the campaign is complete, a committee will scour the Internet to identify the most stylish submission. Bouclair will then award the winning photographer a $1000 Bouclair giftcard.

Play In May will raise awareness for the healing power of play, along with funds for Starlight’s innovative programs that support pediatric patients and their families.

Fundraisers are encouraged to sign up to join the Play in May fundraising campaign while also participating in social media engagement to inspire and motivate players and donors to support the ongoing needs of Starlight kids and families across the nation.

After the resounding success of 2014’s Play In May campaign (exclusively held in the United States), the initiative expanded to include Starlight Canada in 2015.  Individuals, corporations and teams can join the campaign by registering online at PlayinMayCanada.com. Participants are encouraged to engage in play – any play – from May 1 to 15 for just 15 minutes a day. Funds raised will help Starlight support kids and families from hospital to home through its wide array of family-centred programs.

As guests arrived at 1:00 p.m., they were treated to a specialty cocktail while exploring the event’s many offerings including a silent auction, flower market by Anne & Co., jewellery bar by lia sophia and hand made fine millinery by David Dunkley. Once seated, attendees were treated to traditional high tea service, complimented with gourmet treats from celebrity chef Collin Thornton, along with performances by Antonella Cavallaro & Starlight child Emily Hurd.

Starlight Children’s Foundation™ Canada invites families to take the ‘ride of their lives’ at 2nd Annual Drive For Smiles

MONTREAL, QC (August 28, 2014) – On September 21, 2014, hundreds will gather at Circuit ICAR  (12800 Henri Fabre) in Mirabel, Quebec to participate in The UPS Store’s 2nd Annual Drive For Smiles benefiting Starlight Children’s Foundation™ Canada. The event will provide an opportunity for Starlight families to enjoy a fun-filled day on the track, while interacting with luxury cars and participating in a variety of distractive entertainment.

Highlights of the day’s activities include a parade procession of luxury vehicles, followed by Starlight children experiencing the thrill of a lifetime on the Circuit ICAR track. After lunch, families will be invited to take a ride on a helicopter, try their hand at the 1 km go-karting track or watch as drivers show off their best moves on the track.

“We’re so grateful to The UPS Store for assisting us in providing these children and families with an escape from their everyday health concerns,” says Starlight executive director, Brian Bringolf. “Events like Drive For Smiles help families enjoy a day out without the stress of planning, organization and cost.”

Organization Plans Star-Studded Fundraising Event Fit for a Queen

TORONTO, ON (February 25, 2014) – Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada is proud to announce the return of their annual Fundraising Gala on April 5, 2014 at Toronto’s Fairmont Royal York (100 Front St. West). The 19^th annual Starlight Gala will be hosted by the “Queen of Comedy”, Carla Collins, and is presented by Toys“R”Us and Babies“R”Us Canada.

Beginning at 5:30 p.m., over 700 guests will enter a fully transformed venue, fashioned to mirror the evening’s theme, London, Calling! Complete with ‘royal’ influences, programming will include dinner, silent and live auctions and a selection of top Brit-themed entertainment.
