TORONTO, ON - As the summer days draw to a close, National Lazy Day (Wednesday, August 10, 2016) is one of the last chances for many to embrace their inner sloth and spend time relaxing in the seasonal heat. With the inevitable change of pace looming, Urbery, Toronto’s most personalized alcohol and grocery delivery service, has compiled a list of five dreaded tasks and paired them with online tools that will help Torontonians free up their time to enjoy the upcoming holiday.

Walking the dog: As many pet owners know, most days start with a walk around the block with man’s best friend. GoFetch (available on iPhone) can be described as the Uber of dog walking, allowing users to hire nearby (pre-screened) dog walkers in increments of 15 minutes, 30 minutes or an hour at prices as low as $10.

Getting groceries: From lifting to line ups, grocery store shopping can be a real pain — particularly for city dwellers without a car. Urbery (available on web, iPhone or Android) is the solution, offering customers the chance to order two hour delivery from many of their favourite grocery stores (Whole Foods, Loblaws and Sobeys), pharmacies (Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall), and liquor stores (LCBO and Beer Store). Urbery also offers real-time tracking and interaction with personal shoppers (Grocery Gurus) to ensure all products are hand picked and delivered the way the customer wants, along with a 100% freshness guarantee.

Getting ready: Any busy mother or working professional will agree that getting ready for an evening out or a special event can be a time consuming task. beGlammed (available on web, iPhone or Android) aims to make this process easier with on-demand hair and makeup artists that will come directly to your home or hotel room to prepare you for your special function. With women spending an average of 55 minutes a day on their appearance, this tool is a welcome time-saver on those extra-busy (or lazy) days.

Cleaning the house: The lazy person’s dream is to never have to clean the house again. Handy (available on web, iPhone or Android) strives to make this dream a reality with their professional cleaners and handy-people who will clean the house, assemble ikea furniture, paint, and even help you move. This service requires next-day booking, so make sure to plan ahead for National Lazy Day!

Doing the laundry: Washing, folding and taking items to the dry cleaner’s are a thing of the past with Simply Laundry (available on web). This service aims to streamline your life by picking up all of your dirty clothes from your front door or concierge, and returns them to you at the time of your choosing. With wash and fold plans starting at as low as $1.92 a pound, Simply Laundry is one of the most affordable ways to avoid the tedious chore of doing your laundry.

It’s a NEW YEAR, which means a fresh start on your PR objectives for 2016. Today we’re sharing some ideas on how you can continue to build your presence in the media landscape with these 5 easy tips.

1. Issue a press release

Take some time to identify new or exciting developments within your business or organization. Whether its a new product/service, or an accomplishment, announce yourself to media and let them know about what you’re offering/celebrating!

2. Collab with other local businesses

Believe it or not, working with like-minded businesses that align well with your mission/service/product can produce very fruitful results. Think Doritos and Taco Bell (a large scale example, but still)– a tasty collab that resulted in a fabulous pairing, bringing both brands to higher heights. Once you find your mate, hold an event together, or find a way to promote each other’s offerings. It’s always more fun to rise to the top with a friend by your side.

3. Actually USE Social Media

Yes, we all know social media is important, but what is more important is how you use it. Need to find more customers, or expose your product to more people? Get crafty and instigate conversation — and don’t forget the power of a good DM once and awhile.

4. Hold a Lunch and Learn

That’s right! Invite local businesses and media to come in to your space (this would be a great time to use Twitter *wink wink*). Provide them with a hearty lunch (cocktails optional) and explain to them exactly what it is you or your products do. Nothing replaces good ol’ fashion networking.

5. Enlist a PR Pro

We could go on for hours with other savvy ways to enhance your PR efforts. There are hundreds of amazing tactics PR professionals employ to get you the attention you deserve. If you’re looking for some assistance with your PR goals, shoot us an email and we’ll help you make them happen!

Happy 2016, we’re wishing you massive success in the New Year!

Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives (CLGA) will examine LGBTQ+ censorship, resulting from the “Hays Code,” in an exhibit compiled of silver screen films and memorabilia.

TORONTO, ON. (January 27, 2015) – Sissy stereotypes, same-sex interaction and subtext will all come to the forefront in the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives’ new exhibition, Code, Read. Code, Read will see the CLGA’s gallery present four film screenings, along with a collection of film ephemera from 1930 to 1968. This free exhibit is open to the general public beginning February 8, 2015 at the CLGA (34 Isabella St., Toronto).

As films of the 1920s and 30s grew more sophisticated, and as Depression-era audiences dwindled, there was increasing demand for more controversial characters. The hitherto harmless sissy was offset both by more complex queer figures and by more scandalous stereotypes. Debates subsequently arose about the negative effect that Hollywood cinema, and its questionable morals, might have upon society as a whole.

In response, the Motion Picture Production Code, or Hays Code, put in place a series of censorship guidelines by which the production of indecent or immoral filmic content would be restricted. The institution of the Hays Code heralded the end of the sissy – and his more complex counterparts – in popular cinema, and the beginning of more reserved queer characters whose true nature was necessarily buried by subtext and innuendo. Between 1930 and 1968, a span that encompassed Hollywood’s Golden Age of film production, queer characters were either obscured through ambiguity or else written out entirely from Hollywood films. Alternatively, since the Hays Code was willing to allow “sexual perversion” if depicted in a negative light, queer characters who remained in the picture were presented as a series of unflattering stereotypes: murderous villains, suicidal misfits, farcical fairies, or sexual rebels in need of reform.

“The CLGA is proud to welcome audiences to explore an important and highly formative part of cinematic and popular history through this part-exhibition, part-mini film fest. The content of screens – film, TV, the Internet – has been a persistent subject of social debate, with LGBTQ lives and stories frequently taking leading roles,” says CLGA vice president Wil Craddock. “Antagonistic ideals around issues of morality and decency have often demonized LGBTQ representations, pushing for their censorship or promoting the picturing of negative attributes and story lines around queer people. These films offer a compelling (and rare) glimpse into the early queer heyday and subsequent queerphobia of early Hollywood. They comprise a fascinating part of historical mainstream perceptions of LGBTQ people.”

Public can attend Code, Read screenings at the following dates and times. Please note seating is limited and first-come, first-served:

10-track studio release produced by industry veterans who have worked with the likes of Madonna and Michael Jackson.

Toronto, ON (January 20, 2014) -Dee Bronte’s first full length album “Preface”, a beautifully mastered blend of pop, R&B and urban sounds with an acoustic twist, is now available on iTunes. Listeners can expect a unique vocal tone with a wide range of dynamics that serve to propel story-lines in each of the album’s 10 tracks. On top of the full length studio album, Ms. Bronte recently released a stunning collaboration with recording artist Deion, entitled “The Landmark EP”.

“Preface” is the perfect demonstration of how powerful eloquent songwriting and an honest vocal performance can be. The album was produced by Norm Sabourin who has an extensive resume ranging from working with John Legend to 98 Degrees. This full length studio album includes songs like “Bring It Back” and “Say It Loud”, mastered by the very talented Brian Malouf who has worked with music icons Madonna, Barbara Steisand, David Gray and Michael Jackson. Other tracks of note include the album’s 2014 lead single “Same Mistake” (a collaboration with Toronto recording artist VITAL) and the emotionally charged “Wonder”.

On top of releasing her first full length album, Dee Bronte demonstrates her talent has no bounds by collaborating with rising star Deion. Deion Reverie is a gifted singer and producer whose style ranges from pop and indie to alternative music. The couple’s hauntingly beautiful collaboration on The Landmark EP shows the true diversity and capability of Dee’s voice and songwriting abilities.

“Playful and honest. Sarcastic and vulgar. I am always exploring my relationship with various styles of music. I want to create memorable tracks that reflect the layers of the human condition,” says Dee. “For me, writing music is about sharing creative expression. It has no bounds, that’s part of its marvellous appeal.”

Dee Bronte’s album “Preface” can be purchased on iTunes for $9.90 . “The Landmark EP” can be streamed on Soundcloud.

Toronto, ON (January 13, 2015) – Did you know: Saturday, January 17, 2015 is officially deemed “Ditch Your New Year’s Resolutions Day”? With just 8% of people actually achieving their yearly resolutions (Statistic Brain, 2014), Helpling.com, a web-based platform for booking home cleaning services, is providing five easy online tools that can help you curb the urge to ditch your newly-made personal vows.

“Most people start the New Year with good intentions, but after returning from holidays and getting back into the busyness of life, resolutions have a tendency to be forgotten. A lot of people don’t even bother making resolutions because they don’t think they can maintain them,” says Helpling.com managing director Blake Connoy. “With the growing ability to manage our lifestyles online, the Helpling team has five simple online tools that you can use to help keep your resolutions on track.”

Helpling.com offers the following to ensure Torontonians stick to their goals over the next 12 months:

5 Online Tools To Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions

1. Stick To A Healthy Diet: Eating better is on everyone’s agenda in the New Year. Nowadays, you don’t need to resort to ordering a greasy pizza online, as there are plenty of home delivery services that send healthy fresh-made food to your door. Not only is this a great way to better your eating habits, but it also takes the guess work and effort out of planning healthy meals. Some examples of Toronto-based delivery services include fresh food from ChefsPlate.com and EssentialMealDelivery.com, which allow you to follow a meal plan based on your lifestyle.

2. Keep Your Home Clean: A recent survey conducted by Helpling.com revealed that Torontonians want clean homes, but only 5% actually enjoy cleaning. Get a fresh, clean start to your 2015 by usingHelpling.com to take care of the dirty work. Helpling allows you to book a local, experienced, and insured cleaner in just a few clicks for just $25 an hour – taking the stress out of keeping up with your cleaning in the New Year.

3. Keep Fit: While you may vow to go to the gym in the New Year, it doesn’t always happen. There are some amazing apps that allow you to track and keep up with a fitness routine at your own pace, in the comfort of your home. Some of these include: Human (an app that encourages you to get your 30 minutes of activity each day) and Instant Fitness (an app that provides easy workouts for you to do anywhere).

4. Save More Money: Tracking your money can be a real bore, but with sites like Mint.com, you’re able to set budgets, analyze your spending (how much you’ve spent on entertainment, food, etc. each week), and get a hold on where you should scale back — all without having to sort through your monthly bank statements.

5. Learn Something New: Improving your skills and furthering your knowledge (whether for work or for personal growth) is another popular resolution. Learning company Lynda.com allows you to select online courses that you can complete at your own pace from home. Whether web design, photography, business, software or creative skills, there are tutorials available online for you to increase your learning in the New Year.

Critically acclaimed photo exhibit “BUTCH: Not like the other girls” arrives in Toronto

Renowned artist SD Holman brings solo show to Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives as part of North American tour.

TORONTO, ON (October 6, 2014) – Beauty, power and diversity in female masculinity are explored in the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives’ (34 Isabella St.) newest hosted exhibition, BUTCH: Not like the other girls, arriving in Toronto on November 6, 2014 as part of the show’s North American tour.

BUTCH: Not like the other girls debuted as a public art project in transit shelters around Vancouver, Canada, in March 2013, with a simultaneous gallery show at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre (The Cultch). According to Cultch administrators, the opening night – which attracted over 500 patrons – was the largest art opening in their 35 years of operation. The project went viral on the internet, leading to touring exhibitions across the continent. The exhibition catalogue was released by Shooting Gallery Publications in Spring 2014, and is available at bookstores in Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

“We are very excited to bring Butch: Not like the other girls to the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives,” says CLGA vice president William Craddock. “SD Holman’s photographs document, explore and celebrate a myriad of sexual identities and gender expression – visibility that is important to the richness of our communities today and the diversity of our histories for the future. We hope that Toronto audiences will enjoy this exhibition as much as it has been revered at its debut in Vancouver.”

BUTCH is a photographic exploration of the liminal spaces occupied by female masculinity in contemporary queer communities. Holman delineates Butch as “an inclusive site of resistance to limitations on the way women, gender, and sexuality are still defined.” The images honour the beauty, power and diversity of women who transgress the gender binary, with subjects reflecting the many sizes, shapes, ethnicities, and styles of Butch. The transversal dialectic of female masculinity is celebrated here — unapologetic and undiluted.

BUTCH: Not like the other girls opens on Thursday, November 6, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. with a public wine and cheese reception. The Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives is located at 34 Isabella Street in Toronto.

By now, most of us have heard about the transport company, Uber. Riders log into the app, enter their pick up location and are connected with an available driver. Riders are even able to pick the kind of car that drives them ensuring they arrive to their destination in style.

Recently, Uber has introduced a new, cheaper version of the app where pre-screened drivers are able to pick up riders in their own car. The advancement in the highly popular app has raised some safety concerns among critics, however, the company assures their service is completely safe and reliable. Drivers are screened with a complete background check and a follow up is conducted after the ride.

Recently, the taxi company received a major marketing boost from one of the word biggest DJ’s. DeadMau5 signed up as an Uber driver for a night in Toronto, best of all he filmed the whole thing. Check it out!

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has once again come to an end for 2014. Since its inception in 1976, the publicly attended festival has obtained international recognition and is now known for its ability to generate Oscar buzz around successful films. Some notable films that have held their premieres at TIFF include: 12 Years a Slave, American Beauty, 127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire and The Wrestler.

This year’s festival followed the pattern of all previous; the city welcomed the films that will define 2014 and the celebrities that starred in them. Some of the flicks that have garnered the most amount of attention include: “Wild” starring Reese Witherspoon, “The Imitation Game” featuring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightly, and “The Theory of Things,” a biopic on the life of Steven Hawkings.

One unique thing about TIFF is the lack of panel judging and the non-competitive nature of the festival. Also, even though tickets are a hot commodity, they are made publicly available. So, who exactly are these people who seek out the best films and scurry across the city in hopes of getting a glimpse of their favourite celeb? This infographic from NAD Bank gives us a clue as to the profile of a typical TIFF attendee.

This week, singer-songwriter Dee Bronte (proudly represented by EDPR) took a moment out of her busy schedule to talk about the new video for her song, Wonder. ”It started off as something different, and ended up turning into a beautiful ballad…It’s unpretentious, it’s honest and it’s vulnerable,” says Dee.

Filmed in an abandoned Detroit church, the video truly reflects the spirit of the song. Dee was initially hesitant about the location but, videographer Jay Baskey, convinced her that the building was indeed the perfect backdrop for her soulful lyrics. “At first I was reluctant, I’m not a religious person, so I didn’t want people to get the wrong idea, but, when we found this church in Detroit, it spoke to me… it had it’s own story, it was tragic and beautiful.”

Shot in only a few hours, the results represent a beautiful, raw side of Dee. Check it out!

On August 20, 2014 VOCAB Communications will be hosting Meet Me In Africa, an artist showcase to raise funds for an orphanage in Africa. While on a media trip in Arusha, Tanzania, VOCAB founder Chrissy Newton was introduced to the children at Mama Jane’s Orphanage. Her emotional connection to these kids has inspired efforts to provide them with an environment that is safe, nurturing and educational.

This philanthropic project will focus on construction and education, with this year’s goal being to build an outdoor kitchen and a wooden fence. All proceeds from Meet Me In Africa will go directly to the orphanage to aid with the development of their infrastructure, including but not limited to hiring local tradesmen.

Meet Me In Africa will take place at Speakeasy 21 and will be hosted by Taylor Kaye (KiSS 92.5) and Nana Aba Ducan (Radio 2 Top 20 at CBC), and will feature performances by JUNO nominated Alysha Brilla, iSH with DJ Sanga Genesis, Melissa Bel, Craig Stickland, and Broken Sons, as well as a special appearance by JUNO winner Jully Black.

Join in on the event by purchasing tickets here.

Robin Williams’ passing brought us all great sadness. With a wide array of performances, all of which touched us in different ways, we’ve lost a true legend. In honour of one of our favourite actors, we’ve put together a brief highlight of just a few of our favourite Robin Williams performances.

(Source)

Mork and Mindy

Robin Williams’ first big break was the sitcom Mork and Mindy, which ran from 1978 to 1982, featuring Mork (Williams) as an alien who came down to earth, and Mindy who helped him adjust. The world was quickly introduced to the quirky Robin Williams, and it’s safe to say, we loved him!

(Source)

Good Will Hunting

Starring Damon, Affleck, Driver, Skarsgard and of course Williams, Good Will Hunting received universal acclaim from critics and won Robin Williams an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor! Williams played a therapist who helped Will Hunting (Damon) conquer his relationships, past and future. This movie broke our hearts while inspiring and reminding us that “you can do anything you want, you are bound by nothing.”

(Source)

Mrs. Doubtfire

There’s no way we could leave out this hit comedy! Mrs. Doubtfire told the story of an eccentric actor (played by Williams) who disguised himself as a Scottish nanny to stay close to his children after a messy divorce. This is a movie we will never grow tired of, Robin Williams’ crazy antics will always put a smile on our face.

(Source)

Good Morning Vietnam

If anyone could take the subject of war and find its comedic value, it was Robin Williams. This movie chronicles DJ Adrian Cronauer (Williams), a widely popular radio host during the Vietnam War. Cronauer aimed to lift the spirits of troops as he ran into issues with his superiors. ”GOOOOOOD MORNING VIETNAM!”

(Source)

Dead Poets Society

Nominated for numerous awards, Dead Poets Society (set in 1959) portrays Williams as an English professor at a conservative academy in Vermont. John Keating (Williams) inspired his students though poetry, and in turn, inspired us all.

(Source)

Jumanji

This action/adventure film sees two children releasing a strange man from a mystical board game into the modern day world. The series of adventures had us on the edge of our seats growing up, making it a popular choice at slumber parties!

This list should be evidence enough of Robin Williams’ generational reach — he made us laugh and cry, both as children and adults. We will forever cherish this comedic genius and his amazing contribution to the entertainment industry.

With suicide being the suspected cause of death, Robin Williams reminds us of the crushing symptoms of mental health and its disastrous effects on loved ones. We all struggle, however some struggles are deeper than others. In Toronto alone there are numerous resources to support those in need. We have compiled a list of a few local services to help with mental health, anxiety, depression and suicide prevention.

The Gerstein Centre provides crisis intervention to adults who are experiencing mental health problems.

CAMH (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health) provides a variety of programmes including but not limited to counselling, intervention support, rehabilitation and referrals.

CASP (The Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention) provides information and resources to anyone struggling with the effects of suicidal behaviour through understanding, prevention, coping, intervening, grieving and advocating.

Today we are asking our readers to go on a short journey with us.

Imagine yourself boiling a pot of water over your outdoor fire (stoves don’t exist on this journey), only to have some pesky leaves fall into your H2o. Frustrated, you march over to the pot to remove the leaves when you notice an unbelievable aroma rising from the water. Out of curiosity, you decide to let the leaves brew away in your pot. Next thing you know, you have invented what would become the second most popular drink in the world! Sound unrealistic? Well, think again because that’s exactly how tea was created…or, close enough.

Below you’ll find an INFOGRAPHIC with some tasty details on this comforting beverage, but first, we thought you should know about Starlight Children’s Foundation’s 1st Annual Tea and Tiaras event coming to Toronto this November! Be sure to take a look at the website and snag some tickets – it promises to be a fabulous fashion-filled event, complete with tea and scrumptious gourmet treats!

Now, check out this infographic from News By Design for the full tea story!

Labour Day is around the corner, which means two things: the September issue of Vogue and… the end of summer. Before tears of mourning start to flow down your cheeks, we thought we’d compile a list of both indoor and outdoor activities for you, so you can make the most of what’s left of your summer in Toronto.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding

(Source)

Paddle boarding is an amazing way to get out on the water while strengthening your core. Explore Toronto’s waterfront by visiting one of these paddle board rental locations: West | Downtown | East

Watch a Show

(Source)

Check out Soulpepper Theatre for a memorable evening out on the town. On stage this month are The Crucible, Glenn, A Tender Thing and the classic Tartuffe (Moliere). Click to view their Calendar.

Have a Picnic

(Source)

We are blessed with so many beautiful green spaces in Toronto! Pack up a bag with sandwiches, salads, cookies and chips (and maybe a stealth bottle of wine). Bring along a book, a ball and some speakers to ensure you’ll be the most popular picnicker around! Some great spots to check out include High Park, Trinity Bellwoods and Bluffers Park.

Indoor Rock Climbing

(Source)

Don’t let a little rain stop you from being active. Indoor rock climbing is a great way to channel your inner spiderman and get a killer workout at the same time. Joe Rockhead’s on King West is the perfect place to go for a lesson!

CNE

(Source)

“Lets go to the EX!”

For anyone who grew up in the city, the CNE was a highlight of the summer (even if it meant back to school). Gather some friends and let your inner kid run wild – eat a fried mars bar, spin around until you’re about to be sick, or win a (over-priced and hideous) stuffed animal for your sweetie. The CNE is filled with clichés, but that’s why we love it.

VIP Movie Night

(Source)

If you haven’t checked out the VIP theatre at Cineplex Odeon, a rainy summer night is the perfect time to go. With big comfy chairs, beer and wine list and in-seat service you will never go back to watching a movie the pedestrian-style again!

Take a Road Trip

(Source)

It doesn’t have to be far, but getting out of the city for a few days or even a few hours is a great way to make the most of summer. Head out to the Niagara Region for wine and yummy local produce, see a Shakespearean play in Stratford, drive through Mennonite country in St. Jacobs or hike the Bruce trail. With so much around our great city, it’s so easy to get away and rejuvenate without making a long and costly trip.

Taste Of The Danforth

(Source)

Nothing screams summer quite like a Toronto street festival. Be sure to head out to the Taste of the Danforth from August 8th to 10th! Located in greek town, Taste Of The Danforth will be showcasing the best Hellenic food, culture and performances this city has to offer. With this year being the 2oth anniversary, it’s surely one you won’t want to miss.

The Second City

(Source)

Forget that summer is coming to an end with a good laugh at The Second City. After the show, hit up a swanky bar for a delicious cocktail on a patio.

Pool Party

(Source)

This summer is all about the swanky pool party; between Musik, Cabana Pool Bar and The Thompson Hotel there are plenty of opportunities to throw on a bathing suit and sunbathe like a Hollywood celeb. Grab a sun hat and some tanning oil and schmooze like a model – you’ll thank us mid-January when the thought of laying pool side seems like a mythological fantasy.

Have other ideas to add to this list? Share them in the comments below!

**UPDATE: UP Express has since removed their video from YouTube**

If you live in Toronto it won’t be surprising to hear that city was ranked second for having the worst traffic in the country. Traffic congestion has become a hot topic in Toronto politics, often creating feelings of mixed emotions for city residents. Provincial government agency Metrolinx, is responsible for the transformation of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area transportation services.

On Tuesday, Metrolinx released a promotional video for the Union Pearson Express train that’s expected to be completed in time for the 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games. The train is part of The Big Move- Metrolinx’s strategy for improving the Toronto transit system. The UP Express will take commuters from Union Station to Pearson Airport in a speedy 25 minutes and is expected to eliminate 1.2 million car trips in the first year alone.

As transit is one of the most talked about issues in the city, we want to hear what you think of the new UP Express train in the comments below!

Nothing quite compares to eating fresh, local produce. Not only is it tastier and promotes a healthier lifestyle but it’s economically and socially responsible. This weekend, one of our staff had the pleasure of doing a big grocery shop at a local farmers market. It was a fraction of the cost compared to her usual grocery runs, the food was delicious (we all tried the final product) and she found the process itself was immensely enjoyable. This really got the office chatting about the local food trend that seems to be popping up everywhere, particularly on social media.

Over the last few years, there has been a noticeable influx of the local food movement on social media. Prime examples being the 100K diet, eating-locally, and the “felfie” (Farmer Selfie). People have taken something that has existed for centuries (farm to table consumption) and modernized it with a relatively new concept (social media). We all know those friends on social media who spend hours snapping pictures of their fresh food finds, tweeting about trips to the market and sharing farm-to-table recipes on blogs. It is clear this trend has really taken off!

This week’s #TorontoTuesday, we’re highlighting two exciting events taking place over the next month: The Toronto Fringe Theatre Festival and Summerlicious! Understandably, these events can be a bit overwhelming if you’re not sure where to start. Rest assured though, we’ve compiled a list of recommendations to give you some direction.

The Toronto Fringe Theatre Festival

Toronto Fringe festival runs from July 2nd until the 13th and is an annual theatre festival featuring both unknown and well-known artists putting on productions across the city. With tickets ranging from $8.50 to $12, it’s an affordable way to see some great performances, some of which have gone on to be remounted for larger audiences and win awards.

52 Pick-up

(Source)

“52 pick-up” is a series of 52 short vignettes, which piece together the relationship of one particular couple. What makes this show interesting and therefore a must-see is that the show begins with a deck of cards being strewn across the stage. The actors must pick up cards from the floor and follow the description of the scene written on that particular card, making each show unique. Follow the vast array of emotions that accompany any relationship in this funny, amusing and heartbreaking tale of the reality of love and relationships.

Centre of the Universe

(Source)

“The centre of the universe” is the story of a near-future Toronto that is under attack, resulting in the collapse of the CN Tower. The production focuses on four people who are in a bar and are subsequently cut off; no TV, radio or cellphone service. The characters contemplate life, death and why someone would attack the city. Sounds like a fun show to see, but maybe a topic we won’t think too much about!

Hugh and I

(Source)

“Hugh and I” is a musical about Playboy Hugh Hefner growing into a worldwide legend as he creates his media empire. This production chronicles the life of a shy boy turned notorious bachelor through a series of loves and losses. While this topic has been explored and glorified time and time again, this production (which is filled with singing and dancing) is definitely one you shouldn’t miss.

Summerlicious

Summerlicious needs little introduction! It’s an annual event that offers diners exceptional meals (lunch and dinner) for great prices at more than 200 of the city’s top restaurants. Now is the time to try out a new hot spot or a classic location without breaking the bank, and here are just three great restaurants we are excited to check out. Running from July 04, 2014 until July 20, 2014.

Nota Bene

(Source)

Nota Bene is a Toronto staple that has stood the test of time, with Chef David Lee creating menus that demonstrate a balance of classic dishes with a contemporary twists. Some menu items that stand out are the Sanagan’s Pulled Braised Goat with black beans, pico de gallo and goat cheese espuma (a foam) or how about sweet English pea & ricotta ravioli with poached hen’s egg, shaved truffles and kale chips. And for dessert? How about a Hot Sugared Doughnut served with Vanilla ice cream and wild blueberries – YUM.
180 Queen St. W : 416-977-6400
Lunch: $25, Dinner: $45

Chiado

(Source)

Restaurateur Albino Silva’s Chiado, located at College and Ossington, provides an exceptional display of flawless hospitality in an elegant surrounding, but the real star of the show is the seafood. This year’s summerlicous menu offers an array of seafood and vegetarian options, including sardines, fresh cod, seabream and skate fish to name a few. If possible, this might be a place to make a few reservations for!
864 College St. : 416-538-1910
Lunch: $25, Dinner: $45

Bent

(Source)

Why not check out this family run business by the one and only Chef Susur Lee along with his sons Kai and Levi who run the front of house, with the décor having been exceptionally designed by Lee’s wife Brenda Bent. Some dishes that stand out on the summerlicious menu include a fried jerk chicken with smoked chili lime glaze with Ontario tomato and Jicama salad as well as a spring vegetable orzo with ginger, pine nuts, wrapped in an egg crepe. For dessert, nothing beats a mango panna cotta!
777 Dundas St. W; 647-352-0092
Dinner: $35

For the first time this year, it feels like summer has finally arrived! The truth is, the minute Torontonians feel a little warmth, we throw on our shorts and skirts and start soaking up every minute of that sunshine. In honour of all you summer worshipers, we have compiled a list of the top 5 summer activities in Toronto!

1. Toronto Island

(Source)

Toronto Island is not just for the kiddies! Take the island fairy over and enjoy a leisurely bike ride, a day on the beach, or a game of frisbee. No matter what you choose to do, this day out is sure to be a welcome change of scenery.

2. Take In Some Good Eats

(Source)

Known for its multicultural population, Toronto residents have access to food from all over the world, right in their own backyard. Summer is the best time to take advantage of this; whether you visit The Taste of The Danforth, try some fried food at the The Ex, hit up TO Food Fest, or dine at one of the city’s many international restaurants. Toronto provides ample opportunity for its residents to eat their way around the world.

Widely known for her hit television series, “Carlawood”, Collins has been a long-time figure in the Canadian entertainment scene.
3. There is tons to do and see; Toronto Island, CN Tower, Ripley’s Aquarium, Toronto Harbour Front etc.

4. You can literally try any kind of food here you want.

5. We are home to TIFF.

6. National Geographic ranks Toronto as one of the most civil cities in the world.

7. Toronto has some of the best theatre productions out there.

8. We have a strong LGBTQIA community (Toronto Pride Week attracts over 1 million attendees annually).

9. Toronto knows how to celebrate: Caribana, The CNE, Buskerfest, Jazz Festival.

10. Toronto consistently ranks near the top of most livable cities in North America.

EDPR would like to introduce singer/songwriter Dee Bronte. Dee’s promotional pop single and video “Same Mistake” was released on VEVO this past week. This release marks the start of a new chapter for Bronte and presents a brilliant collaboration with fellow musician VITAL. The musical chemistry between the two artists is undeniable, creating an authentic track of heartbreak and struggle. With acoustic guitar in hand Bronte strives to produce song and lyric from an honest, creative place:

“I’m always exploring my relationship with various types of music. The acoustic guitar is the vessel I use the most, and I find my most honest lyrics and melodies come from it. I want to write memorable tracks. For me, writing music is about sharing creative expression. It has no bounds! It’s meant to be shared, enjoyed, and evoke something in us. My debut track is a collaboration featuring VITAL, an incredibly talented artist and over-all lovely person. He puts up with me and my constant marriage proposals. We had a blast doing the track and video. My album is slated to debut in April, with new singles coming soon which I’m pumped about.”

Getting to know the Dee Bronte behind the music is just as thrilling as listening to her work. The Canadian musician, who doesn’t like taking life too seriously, generated her roots in musical theatre. After a great beginning, she stepped out on her own playing at local coffee houses, mastering the guitar and developing her writing skills. Following a stint in the Broadway rock band ‘Stagehands,’ Bronte decided that a solo career was the ideal fit for her and we couldn’t be more thrilled that she made this choice.

Dee Bronte is planning to release her first full-length album April 2014. We’ve had a little preview, and are thrilled with the upcoming material — can’t wait for you to see what she’s got in store!

Check out her single “Same Mistake” here, follow the singer on twitter and take time to visit her fan page.

Rob Ford in all his close-up glory
(Source)

In light of Rob Ford’s recent confession to smoking crack cocaine, we decided to write about how his train-wreck of a impromptu press conference could have been diverted from disastrous to passable. After a short discussion, we realized that he made the situation much worse simply by the way he presented it (click the link to watch the press conference). We can use Ford as an example for any communications crisis/disaster by explaining different ways that it can be dealt with. Preserving at least a shred of the company’s or person’s dignity in a PR disaster such as this one is key. Even when it seems impossible to do so, such as Mayor Rob Ford’s case, there are still ways to soften the blow (or crack).

Communications crises and disasters are inevitable at some point or another. It’s knowing how to deal with them accordingly and ‘saving face’ that makes a scandal less…well…scandalous.

Step 1: Admitting the problem - Imagine how differently Mayor Rob Ford’s press conference would have gone if he had shifted focus from his crack-smoking video to him publicly admitting that he has an alcohol problem and that he will be seeking help. Temporarily leaving his position as Mayor while he is ‘recovering’ also would have helped greatly. By simply blaming it on a ‘drunken stupor,’ he gives absolutely zero gravity to the situation. Calling your ex and yelling at them is something that happens in a drunken stupor. A mayor of a city caught smoking crack on video is a problem. You will still be held accountable, of course – there’s no way you can get around that. But at least you have admitted your problem to the public and shown them that you are human with imperfections and mistakes.

Step 2: Owning up to the problem – It seems as if the mayor spent most the press conference bashing the reporters for asking the wrong questions and claiming that he did not lie to them at any point in the past. As if he’s trying to blame the reporters for his mistake, Mayor Rob Ford is trying to shift focus from him denying allegations to the fact that the reporters were at fault by not asking the right question. He admits to making mistakes, but it becomes overshadowed by his blaming the reporters. By owning up to his problems and being completely honest with the public on a more humbling level, he could have saved some respect (not much, but some). What else can be said when you tell people “I did this, and therefore I will be held accountable for my actions,” Sure, you’ll still be viewed negatively, but you’ll be saving some face.

Step 3: Lay low - If you’ve admitted your problem and owned up to your problem, then you’ve got a good chance to recover from the publicity mess. However, we recommend you lay low for a while and let the dust (insert another crack pun) settle before coming back out into the public eye. At this point, stepping down or temporarily leaving his position is Mayor Rob Ford’s only chance to survive this scandal.

Ah, can you smell it? That lovely hint of decay in the air? Whether it be flowers, leaves, or flesh; it means October is officially here. Everywhere you look this month you’ll see orange, black, pumpkins, fake cobwebs and all things Halloween. Sure, it’s also the month for Thanksgiving here in Canada and the start of Fall, but we’re mostly focused on the fun of dressing up as our favourite characters, creatures, ghouls and other ghastly things (Miley VMAs, anyone?). But where’s the fun in dressing up if you don’t know where to go to show off your amazingly grotesque costume? (ok, it doesn’t have to be grotesque – it can be pretty, too) Here’s a list of 6 Halloween events and parties going on in Toronto this month that you can’t miss.

Toronto After Dark Film Festival – No need to dress up for this one (although, if you want to dress up, you most certainly can!). If you’re looking for a more laid-back Halloween event where you can watch all the horror, action, sci-fi and cult classics and munch on snacks late at night, this is the event for you.

Where: Scotiabank Theatre,
When: October 17th-25th. Showtimes TBD
Cost: $143 for all-access pass to screenings on all days (you also earn 2,000 Scene points). Individual tickets are $13 and go on sale Oct 3rd.

Church Street’s Halloween Night Block Party - With three blocks of the Church and Wellesley area closed off from vehicular traffic, the annual Church Street Halloween Night Block Party is one of the biggest outdoor Halloween events in the city. Peruse the streets in your best costume, check out other great costumes, have a few drinks and party in one of the liveliest neighborhoods in Toronto.
Where: Church and Wellesley
When: Thursday October 31st. 7pm-2am
Cost: Free

Halloween Haunt @ Canada’s Wonderland – Every weekend evening in October, Canada’s Wonderland hosts their annual Halloween Haunt. You can run through mazes, be chased by nightmarish demons and killers, or go on their terrifying adrenaline-pumping rides. Just remember that those people chasing you through the maze are actors – they won’t harm you, so don’t try to defend yourself by, lets say, knocking them out with your fist (yes, it has happened).

Where: Canada’s Wonderland, 9580 Jane St., Vaughan, ON
When: Weekend Nights in October until Sunday, Oct 27th. 7pm-12am
Cost: $29.99 online or $37.99 at the park

Toronto Zombie Walk – The internationally famed Zombie Walk is coming to Toronto on October 26th. The pre-show starts at 2pm, with the actual walk starting at 3pm. We recommend getting there at 12, so you have plenty of time to check out the different vendors, take pictures of zombies and mingle amongst your fellow living dead. For full details and a map of the walk, visit the website. This is strictly a cannibal-free event.

When: Saturday October 26th, 2013 12pm
Where: Nathan Phillips Square
Cost: Free

Screemers – The legendary Screemers has been around for 21 years and is known as Canada’s #1 haunted indoor park. The park features live actors, special effects and images that will keep you up at night for the next month. If you get scared easily or have a weak heart, we wouldn’t recommend Screemers. The live actors make the experience all too real. We have to stress this again, however: they’re actors and they will not harm you! We promise.

Where: Screemers, 160 Princes Blvd, Toronto, ON
When: Every Friday and Saturday from Oct. 11th to Nov 2nd 7pm-12am.
Special Halloween hours: Wednesday Oct 30th 7pm-11pm & Thursday Oct 31st 7pm-12am
Cost: $24.95 online w/ $5 off coupon

2. Thursdays & First Tuesday of every month @ Madison Avenue Pub: If you’re on a budget but love to go out (in Toronto, this can be a deadly combination), then hit up the Madison on a Tuesday. It’s a multi-level pub that was built out of three Victorian homes and houses a piano room, dance-floor, and four more pubs that suit your comfort level. They’re celebrating their 30th Anniversary by offering prices from their menu in 1983 on every first Tuesday of the month. You can enjoy bar rail drinks, burgers, pints, grilled cheese sandwiches and many more for only $3. If you can’t go on a first Tuesday of the month, they offer $3 drinks every Thursday. (14 Madison Ave.)

3. Half-priced Cinema Tuesdays: Next time you want to watch a movie without breaking the bank, go to the theatre on a Tuesday. They only charge 50% of the admission price, so you can get away with going to the movies for under $10. Unfortunately, they don’t offer 50% off the food (they’ll still charge you an arm and a leg for popcorn and drinks).

(Source)

4. Kensington Market: One of our favourite neighbourhoods, Kensington Market is a great place to explore unique shops, art galleries, coffee shops and parks. It’s free to walk around, window shop and see the multi-colored homes and graffiti. (Btwn Bathurst St. and Spadina Ave., Dundas St. and College St.)

(Source)

5. The Green Room: Located in a back alley by Bloor and Bathurst, the Green Room is a super-hip dive bar that is very easy on the wallet. Their appetizers are all in the $3-$5 range (with the exception of a few), and their entrees are in the $7 range. Every day of the week they have drink deals like Beer Bottle Tuesdays with imported bottles at $4.50. With those prices, you can eat out and have drinks without feeling guilty or overspending. (296 Brunswick Ave)

6. The Java House: Don’t shy away from this place when you see the mismatched wallpaper and furniture inside. What it lacks in décor, it makes up for in cheap drinks and cheap food. Their meals don’t go over ten bucks, and their pitchers aren’t over $14. Just don’t go there expecting the same service you would get at a high-end restaurant. Bonus: they have a great patio!
Yoga

Grab your yoga mat and indulge in the relaxation of your body and soul. Turn down the lights, light the candles and let the sound of the rain be your background accompaniment. Whether you choose to do yoga at home or in a studio, you will find yourself in a peaceful bliss. There are yoga studios all over the city, but here are a few to get you started!

The Yoga Lounge

Max out the mall photo booths

Photo booths are classics. Go to the mall with a few friends and go crazy with the duck faces! (We won’t tell.) Don’t forget that stores like Aritzia or Urban Outfitters have their own photo booths as well!

Location: 3401 Dufferin St.

Unleash your inner book worm

Snuggle up and immerse yourself in a good novel. If you don’t want to stay home, pay a visit to the World’s Biggest Bookstore, right here in Toronto! With 64 000 square feet, you’ll never run out of books to get into.

Drink and play

Can’t decide between nuzzling in a café and challenging your friends to a friendly tournament? Drinks and entertainment fusion cafes are popping up all over the city and we couldn’t be happier. Snuggle up with a hot chocolate or beer and laugh the day away!

Even if the rain is coming down, take a tour out on the waters! If it’s not too much rain, the precipitation will only add to the experience. Look out at the Toronto skyline, waterfront and Toronto Islands under the soothing rain. Romantic much?

Patio season is what makes spending the summer months in the city so amazing. One of our favorite things to do is grabbing a drink with friends outdoors; complete with clear blue skies overhead and the gorgeous city view as backdrop. We have put together a list of must-visit patios around Toronto to make your summer planning a little easier. Whether you’re looking for cheap drinks or rooftop views, you’ll be sure to find something here. Although we haven’t visited every single patio on this list, we will keep you posted with reviews throughout this summer as we make our way through this selection.

For an incredible view of the lake, Against The Grain is your best bet. Located in Harbourfront and right next to Sugar Beach, it’s within walking distance from downtown Toronto, but the slow waves and glistening sand in the distance will take you away from the stress of the city.

Le Papillon on the Park

The tables are set, the servers are trained, and the food is to die for: but what good is all that, if no one knows about the restaurant? In a competitive landscape like Toronto, where new hotspots seem to pop up each week – there’s one thing that can make the difference between a full house and an empty one. The answer? PR.

Any restaurant professional knows that empty seats are like idle dollars waiting to be made – and it’s important to operate as efficiently as possible. PR can make those empty seats full in a matter of ‘media hits’ by effectively positioning the restaurant into public view.

How, you ask?

There’s several tactics to making sure the restaurant in question gets favourably placed in the media. Any PR pro worth their salt will work with the GM, the executive chef, and perhaps the concierge to ensure they get a full grasp of the restaurant’s offerings.

PR pros have even been known to conduct ‘secret shopper’ visits to see exactly what the ‘secret sauce’ (media angle) of the restaurant really is – and build on it.

From showcasing the establishment’s chef on a popular breakfast show, to facilitating special promotional events, to getting a respected reviewer into your restaurant – a PR pro’s skills can make the desirable happen!

What else, you ask?

Well, coverage is great – but it’s important to get the right coverage. PR pros can sift through their extensive contact lists and cater pitches to target the right people and the right outlets for your delicious restaurants to start making delicious profits.

That’s not all though, social media should also be high on your PR person’s list as a fantastic way to generate some organic buzz around the restaurant. Skilled pros will have tactics to create content for the standard Twitter & Facebook, along with Instagram, Pinterest, and even Tumblr!

Remember: innovation is of the utmost importance. If you work with an agency that has a focus on doing things ‘differently’ – you’ll most definitely see the results you desire.

We know the restaurant industry is insanely competitive, and guess what? So are we.

There are few things left that we as brands can really do to garner the kind of desirable attention we’re after. Simple media buying, banner ads, etc. really don’t make the cut anymore (or atleast, can’t be the sole pieces of your campaigns). The world of social media continues to evolve daily – and I’ve yet to meet someone who truly understands the ROI of their efforts. There’s so many tools and engines out there that promise to be the answer to all your social media needs, but they tend to distract from the true minimum viable product. The reality is, social networking is innately human – and when creating buzz, and drawing attention to a brand, product or subject, it’s only right that a ‘real’ person takes on the job.

Enter the TWITTER PARTY (Twarty for short). A revolutionary new way to engage with consumers and brand advocates alike, while effectively spreading a message across millions of viewers. I currently handle the marketing efforts for a Toronto start-up called Shopcatch. Shopcatch works with retailers to provide promotional strategies that will enhance consumer experience while driving transactions. Recently I had the pleasure of taking on H&M Canada as a client: they were looking to create some exposure for their amazing CONSCIOUS collection. I thought this would be a great opportunity to provide them with a customized twitter party, and really dive into their massive consumer base. Although this was not my first time hosting a ‘twarty’ – I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised with my results.

I’ll let the INFOGRAPHIC do the talking:

As you can see, the potential for exposure is PHENOMENAL. But it doesn’t stop at retail. There’s plenty of brands, events, restaurants, openings, galleries and more that could benefit from the kind of attention a TWARTY can grab them.

If you’re interested in what a TWARTY can do for your business, or would like more info, feel free to reach out! I always love discussing initiatives, and helping brands/companies achieve maximum potential within the socialsphere.

How about you, have you ever participated in a twitter party? Tell me about it in the comments below – and be sure to include your twitter handle so I can follow you!
