“Her brand of self-deprecating, brutally honest humour had the packed room howling.”
-Xtra Magazine
TORONTO, ON (May 13, 2014) – After a string of sold-out shows, Canada’s “queen of comedy”, Carla Collins, is returning to Toronto to perform four instalments of her gut-busting stand-up comedy act, “Selfie-Centred”. Collins will be performing at The Flying Beaver Pubaret (488 Parliament St.) on Saturday, May 24, 2014 (7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. showtimes) and at Locale Restaurant and Bar (12981 Keele S. at King Rd.) on Saturday, May 31, 2014 (7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. showtimes).

Currently in Toronto shooting Super Channel’s new comedic panel/variety show, “Too Much Information”, Collins is thrilled to be back in Canada. “I love coming home to perform in Toronto because the audiences are really smart, warm, hip and a tad drunk — and my fabulous Mom comes to every show. Besides, I need to be in Toronto to help find the missing Rob Ford. Instead of his picture being on a milk carton, it’s on bottles of Grey Goose.”
Widely known for her hit television series, “Carlawood”, Collins has been a long-time figure in the Canadian entertainment scene. In 2001, Carla’s first solo stand-up special, “The Wonder Bra Years”, aired on The Comedy Network, becoming one of the highest rated in the network’s Comedy Now series. Collins is also credited as being the first woman to anchor a major market morning radio show in Canada.
Carla has also become a staple in the Los Angeles stand-up community, performing shows in venues such as the Hollywood Improv and The Comedy Store. Although based in Los Angeles, Carla frequently returns to Canada to perform stand-up shows in Ottawa and Toronto, Ontario; Calgary, Alberta; Vancouver, British Columbia; St. John’s, Newfoundland; Montreal, Quebec; and St. John, New Brunswick.

Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives Celebrates WorldPride With An Art Exhibition, Historical Tours, Community Displays and more
07 May 2014/0 Comments/in Clients, Embrace Disruption Blog /by Embrace Disruption PRTORONTO, ON (May 7, 2014) – As Toronto gears up to host WorldPride 2014, the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives (CLGA) celebrates with a series of public programs that shed light on LGBTQ human rights, identities and histories from around the world. The organization’s WorldPride lineup includes an art exhibition entitled Imaging Home: Resistance, Migration, Contradiction; a historical walking tour in partnership with Heritage Toronto and many other community displays and activities.
The CLGA’s official WorldPride 2014 exhibition, Imaging Home: Resistance, Migration, Contradiction, brings together documentary video and photographic work that explores the experiences of LGBTQ individuals living in oppressive regions around the globe. Works from Uganda, Kenya, Guyana, the Caribbean, India and Toronto are pieced together to tell a compelling story about the challenge of envisioning human rights at home – wherever that home is. Additionally, viewers are able to participate in the exhibition by adding their own photos to the collection as part of a growing “global family photo album.” Imaging Home: Resistance, Migration, Contradiction is a joint project of the CLGA and the international project, Envisioning Global LGBT Human Rights. A complimentary opening reception will take place at the CLGA (34 Isabella St.) on Tuesday June 24, 2014 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
“With the addition of photographs and videos that deal with the theme of ‘home’, we hope to draw attention to the many issues experienced locally and internationally,” says CLGA curator, Karen Stanworth. “WorldPride is not just a celebration, but also an opportunity to think about the ongoing crises affecting individuals around the globe.”
Residents and visitors to Toronto are also able to experience a variety of community displays and events presented by the CLGA across the city including:
- A small show of selected work entitled “Queer and Muslim: Finding Peace Within Islam” by Samra Habib. Also opening on June 24 at the CLGA (34 Isabella St).
- A WorldPride display at the Toronto Reference Library (789 Yonge St.) opening mid May, featuring items from the CLGA’s collections such as posters from early Pride parades and picnics and scans from periodicals and pulp fiction.
- A WorldPride display at Toronto City Hall (100 Queen St. W.) opening June 21, 2014, presenting several timelines of significant LGBTQ communities and events including parenting, the bathhouse raids, marriage equality and more.
- Pride Walk: Discovering Toronto’s LGBTQ Heritage from June 20 – June 27, 2014, (a partnership initiative between the CLGA and Heritage Toronto) features 90 minute historical walking tours of the Church-Wellesley village, inclusive of The Toronto Aids Memorial, The Barn, Glad Day Books, the CLGA and many other notable destinations. Scheduling and tickets ($20) are available by visiting http://heritagetoronto.org.
- In-house tours of the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives (34 Isabella St.) from June 25 to June 30, 2014. Visitors can drop in during the WorldPride hours (listed below) to view the CLGA facilities and collection.
The CLGA’s WorldPride hours are June 25-26 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., June 27 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and June 28 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. For a full schedule of events and programming offered by the CLGA, please visit http://www.clga.ca/worldpride-clga.

Our Favourite Looks From The 2014 Met Gala
06 May 2014/0 Comments/in Embrace Disruption Blog /by Embrace Disruption PRThe biggest evening in fashion, the annual Met Gala (a fundraising gala benefiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute) took over New York’s Metropolitan Museum last night. This year’s theme, White Tie and Decorations, paid tribute to the first U.S. couture designer, Charles James. The night was filled with some definite high fashion hits — check out some of our favourites!
Our Stand-Out Female Picks:
A surprise to no one, Sarah Jessica Parker is a showstopper in this work of art gown by Oscar de la Renta. We love the red signature on the train — similar to how an artist would sign off on a painting. Absolute genius.
Actress and model Suki Waterhouse takes our breath away in this beautiful Burberry design. The subdued makeup and neutral gown highlights her amazing natural beauty.
Supermodel Gisele Bundchen looks beautiful in this fitted Balenciaga dress. Don’t worry, husband Tom Brady cleaned up pretty well too.
The Power Couples
When you have two people as stunning as Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, together with Gucci, you know the outcome is going to be good. The couple and designer did not disappoint.
At these sort of affairs, men usually play it pretty safe and all eyes fall on the ladies. However, this year was a little different. Leave it to Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka to turn heads in their unusual attire designed by Tom Ford. While we are not positive we love the look, we most certainly applaud the originality. Bravo guys!
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have made some questionable choices in their personal lives, but last night, they left no room for debate. The two looked fabulous in their outfits designed by Lanvin.
Let us know your thoughts on last night’s attire in the comments below, or tweet us @EmbraceDisrupt!
