Film Friday: Meghan Trainor’s Video & Fall — PR Tactics or Coincidence?

The past couple years, Meghan Trainor has taken the world by storm with her positive body anthems and addictive melodies. This week in particular, it would seem Trainor has dominated the Internet with two very public mishaps: the first being a music video in which she was photoshopped to appear thinner (she quickly had it removed and replaced with an untouched version); the second, a fall after her (pre-taped) performance on Jimmy Fallon yesterday.

The two incidences (both videos below) brought questions to the forefront in the PR community of whether these moments happened by “accident”, or were part of a master PR plan constructed to bring attention to a new single that may not have otherwise been subject to as much exposure. The idea being, more would flock to view the unaltered YouTube video because of Meghan’s insistence to change it, followed by people seeking out the Jimmy Fallon performance to watch the fall — both activities exposing the song to a larger group of people on an international scale.

Check out the videos below and tell us in the comments: are these PR tactics or coincidence? Either way, we think it worked in her favour!

5 Performances to Look Forward to at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards + Printable Ballot

If there’s one music awards show to look forward to each year (besides the Grammys), it’s The Billboard Music Awards. The show that brought us game changing performances from Beyonce (“Run The World (Girls)” in 2013), Whitney (“I Have Nothing” in 1993), and the epic fail of a collaboration from Britney and Iggy, (“Pretty Girls” in 2015) is back this year with tons of exciting moments on deck! Today we’re ranking the top five performances we’re most looking forward to at this year’s show:

    pink&kesha

    5. Pink/Kesha (a tie)

Yes, we had to start this list off as a tie, because this banger of an awards show has such an allstar line-up. It’s been so long since we’ve seen Pink perform live, and frankly, we’re ready for her comeback! She’ll be singing her new track “Just Like Fire” and we venture to guess some pyrotechnics might be in the works. Then of course, how could you not look forward to seeing Kesha back on stage after the whirlwind of a year she’s had with her Dr. Luke court case. The world is cheering for Kesha, and we can’t wait to hear what she has in store!

    4. Troye Sivan

This YouTuber turned singer is dominating the music world right now. From the release of his very first EP in 2014, his haunting and electro inspired music has captured the hearts of many (lead track, “Happy Little Pill” above — watch it!). Troye will be performing his newest hit “Youth” from his debut solo album “Blue Neighbourhood”.

Celine Dion – The Show Must Go On by CelineDionForever

    3. Celine Dion

Sure to be the most heart-wrenching performance of the night, Celine will take to the world stage and sing her rendition of Queen’s hit, “The Show Must Go On” (video above). The song choice, which undoubtedly is a reference to the horrible year she’s had losing both her husband and brother in the course of a few days, will be one emotional moment not to miss.

    2. Britney

If you haven’t been fortunate enough to see Britney in Vegas over the last few years *raises hand*, you’re likely aching for a new Britney awards show performance. Not only will Brit be performing a medley of her classic hits, she’ll also be *giving us more* (see what we did there?) by debuting her new track “Make Me (Oooh)” from her upcoming 2016 album. Knowing that she’s been killing it lately in Vegas (video proof above), we really can’t wait for Brit Brit to slay us with new music!

    1. Madonna, obviously

Just yesterday it was announced that the Queen of Pop would be honouring Prince in a very special tribute performance this year. The two were great friends and even collaborated on a track called “Love Song” back in the day. Madonna ALWAYS delivers the water-cooler moment at any event she performs, and we expect nothing less from this year’s plans. In addition to the performance, Madonna is nominated for Top Touring Artist, which she definitely deserves to take home (video evidence above).

The 2016 Billboard Music Awards will air May 22 on ABC at 8 p.m. EST / 7 p.m. CST from Las Vegas.

Five of the Best Podcasts for Work, Gym, Tan, Laundry …(we had to)

If there’s one thing we’re obsessed with in the office these days, it’s PODCASTS!  We all have tasks in our daily work or personal lives that can sometimes be tedious (in PR: updating media lists, or formatting a newsletter; in life: dishes and the gym), and listening to a favourite podcast can turn the mundane into magic!

Today we surveyed the team to put together a definitive list of our top five podcasts (that you can download now for FREE on iTunes) to make your day even more enjoyable! Take a look at our choices below (all images courtesy of the iTunes store):

        cover170x170

        5. Allegedly with Theo Von & Matthew Cole Weiss

A favourite among EDPR staff, this podcast invites a new celebrity to the studio each Tuesday, while hosts Theo and Matt take turns competing for the guest’s attention (and affection). After rounds of Hollywood story telling, an interview session and an often heated debate, the end result is a hilarious hour of conversation, and the odd celebrity juicy scoop!

Guests include: Scary Spice Mel B, Amber Rose, Jerry O’Connell, Kato Kaelin, Ross Mathews and many, many more!

        cover170x170-1

        4. Here’s The Thing with Alec Baldwin

The most polished of the bunch, this podcast boasts amazing production and the soothing voice of Alec Baldwin as he interviews some of the world’s finest “artists, policy makers and performers”. Mr. Baldwin takes us behind the scenes into a conversation that often feels like you’re sitting in the same room, listening to old friends discuss some of pop culture’s most intriguing topics.

Guests include: Sarah Jessica Parker, Jimmy Fallon, Kris Kardashian, Carol Burnett, Julianne Moore and yes, Kris Kardashian.

        cover170x170-2

        3. Throwing Shade

Likely one of the funniest on this list, Throwing Shade is a podcast co-hosted by comedians Erin Gibson and Bryan Safi, focusing on “issues important to ladies and gays”. The two hosts banter about many of the week’s hottest topics, often going off into tangents that are likely to make you spit out that afternoon cup of joe. This podcast is so popular, Gibson and Safi have been green lit to premiere a companion television show on TV Land in 2017!

        cover170x170-3

        2. Savage Lovecast

21 seasons in, this weekly Tuesday podcast never disappoints! Hosted by sex advice columnist Dan Savage, listeners are treated to a myriad of different issues plaguing callers from across the globe. If you’re listening to this one at work, it’s best to keep those earbuds in, but you’ll definitely be entertained — and even learn a thing or two!

        cover170x170-4

        1. Straight Talk with Ross Mathews

Number one was an easy choice for all of us here at EDPR. Once you become a listener of Ross Mathews’ weekly podcast, it becomes impossible to not fall in love with Ross and his zany “wack pack” of co-hosts including assistant Brenda, manager Maaaaaark, friends Nikki B, Peppa, and of course Steve. A mix-bag of celebrity interviews, entertaining challenges, caller advice and hot topics, this show is one you’ll look forward to every week.

Guests include: Lauren Conrad, Rosie O’Donnell, RuPaul, Brittany Snow, Michelle Visage and so many more!

Definitely take a moment to check out some of our recommendations, and be sure to leave a comment if you think we’ve left a podcast out! Also, if you’re looking for some PR-based podcast recommendations, check out our post here.

Canada’s leading toy and juvenile retailer continues support of Starlight Children’s Foundation™ Canada’s programming to brighten the lives of ill children and their families.

Edmonton, AB (October 20, 2014)- On November 18, 2014, an Edmonton-based Starlight child will participate in a 3-Minute Dash through the Toys“R”Us store at West Edmonton Mall (9908 170 Street NW) to snatch as much merchandise as possible within a three minute timeframe.

The 3-Minute Dash is donated by Toys“R”Us as part of their longstanding partnership with Starlight Canada and will take place in five cities across Canada: Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver. Participants were randomly selected from each province as part of a contest Starlight Canada held earlier this month. Applicants were asked to share the details of their care journey and submit them to their local Starlight programs coordinator for entry.

“Toys“R”Us, Canada’s ongoing commitment to our in and out-of-hospital programming is invaluable to Starlight,” says Starlight executive director, Brian Bringolf. “Special events like the 3-Minute Dash provide Starlight children with a chance to create much-needed positive memories away from the hospital, treatments and therapies.”

“Children have always been the focus of our charity work and Starlight continues to be a great partner for us as together, we share the goal of brightening the lives of seriously ill children when they need a reason to smile” says Kevin Macnab, President, Toys“R”Us Canada.  “Providing the Starlight children with an empty cart, and full reign of a Toys“R”Us store for 3 minutes, is the perfect escape from their hospital stay, as they race through the aisles and experience a fun and unique opportunity that they will never forget.  After events like these, it’s the joy on the children’s faces that motivate our employees to continue to raise funds and awareness for Starlight and towards making a difference in children’s lives.”

During the 16 year partnership, Toys“R”Us, Canada has raised over $12 million dollars for Starlight Canada. This year, in addition to the 3-Minute Dash, Toys“R”Us, Canada has helped to sponsor:

          • 101 Hospital Grants (Montetary funding to support distractive entertainment for hospitalized children)
          • 10,500 ER Admit Kits (A variety of care products for children and parents during unexpected hospital stays)
          • 7,000 Baby & Toddler Fun Kits (Cuddly toys and games to distract very young children during unpleasant hospital stays)
          • 10 Fun Centers (Mobile entertainment units featuring a Sharp AQUOS flat-screen television, a DVD player, a Nintendo Wii™ gaming system and a wide variety of Wii games)
          • $150,000 in Great Escapes Sponsorships (A program that provides Starlight families with a chance to enjoy fun events together to create priceless memories, relax and then return home with a renewed sense of strength and hope)
          • 100 Starlight Treasure Chests (A box filled with toys and surprises, used by children during appointments at the hospital or clinic)

5 Ways To Improve Your Public Relations in 2016

              upyr

It’s a NEW YEAR, which means a fresh start on your PR objectives for 2016. Today we’re sharing some ideas on how you can continue to build your presence in the media landscape with these 5 easy tips.

              1. Issue a press release

Take some time to identify new or exciting developments within your business or organization. Whether its a new product/service, or an accomplishment, announce yourself to media and let them know about what you’re offering/celebrating!

              2. Collab with other local businesses

Believe it or not, working with like-minded businesses that align well with your mission/service/product can produce very fruitful results. Think Doritos and Taco Bell (a large scale example, but still)– a tasty collab that resulted in a fabulous pairing, bringing both brands to higher heights. Once you find your mate, hold an event together, or find a way to promote each other’s offerings. It’s always more fun to rise to the top with a friend by your side.

              3. Actually USE Social Media

Yes, we all know social media is important, but what is more important is how you use it. Need to find more customers, or expose your product to more people? Get crafty and instigate conversation — and don’t forget the power of a good DM once and awhile.

              4. Hold a Lunch and Learn

That’s right! Invite local businesses and media to come in to your space (this would be a great time to use Twitter *wink wink*). Provide them with a hearty lunch (cocktails optional) and explain to them exactly what it is you or your products do. Nothing replaces good ol’ fashion networking.

              5. Enlist a PR Pro

We could go on for hours with other savvy ways to enhance your PR efforts. There are hundreds of amazing tactics PR professionals employ to get you the attention you deserve. If you’re looking for some assistance with your PR goals, shoot us an email and we’ll help you make them happen!

Happy 2016, we’re wishing you massive success in the New Year!

#GivingTuesday: 4 Canadian Charities You Should Support

                  banner2015_en

As we bask in the afterglow of Black Friday deals and Cyber Monday madness (yes, even we in Canada partake in these wild traditions), it’s important to take a moment to not only be thankful, but to give back. Giving Tuesday, which occurs on the first Tuesday of December each year, is a day set aside for people across the globe to remember the importance of contributing to worthy causes both locally and internationally.

We at EDPR have identified four charities that are very close to our hearts, and suggest you take a moment to check them out and (if you can) donate to the cause.

                  1. World Animal Protection (WAP)

Being the animal lovers we are, it should come as no surprise that this charity lands at the top of our list.

“We are World Animal Protection. We were known as WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals). Our vision is a world where animal welfare matters and animal cruelty has ended. Together we can move the world to protect animals.”

Read more about World Animal Protection by clicking here.

                  2. Toronto People With AIDS Foundation

Although strides have been made in the HIV/AIDS community, it’s important to remember that there are still many in the world suffering with this epidemic.

“We engage people living with HIV/AIDS in enhancing their health and well-being through practical and therapeutic support services and broader social change, and we inspire them to live into their dreams and discoveries.”

Read more about Toronto People With AIDS Foundation by clicking here.

                  3. Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada

Having the pleasure of working with Starlight Canada for many years, we’ve been privileged enough to see just how impactful their work is for sick children and their families.

“Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada has been brightening the lives of seriously ill children and their families by them bringing joy, laughter and relief, for over 25 years. We focus on the family as a whole, at a time when they feel most isolated, offering programs and events that can provide an escape from the stress of dealing with a serious illness every day.”

Read more about Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada by clicking here.

                  4. Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives

More client love on this list, but also an organization that holds much importance to the LGBTQIA+ community in Canada. Often overlooked, this valuable charity is detrimental to preserving important pieces in Canadian history.

“The Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives (CLGA) is the largest independent LGBTQ+ archives in the world. With a focus on Canadian content, the CLGA acquires, preserves and provides public access to information and archival materials in any medium.”
