Critically Acclaimed Photo Exhibit “BUTCH: Not Like The Other Girls” Arrives in Toronto

Unapologetic and undiluted, the images in BUTCH: Not like other girls set out to honour the beauty, power and diversity of women with subjects reflecting the many sizes, shapes, ethnicities, and styles of what it means to be Butch.” – Mark Robins, Gay Vancouver

Critically acclaimed photo exhibit “BUTCH: Not like the other girls” arrives in Toronto

Renowned artist SD Holman brings solo show to Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives as part of North American tour.

TORONTO, ON (October 6, 2014) – Beauty, power and diversity in female masculinity are explored in the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives’ (34 Isabella St.) newest hosted exhibition, BUTCH: Not like the other girls, arriving in Toronto on November 6, 2014 as part of the show’s North American tour.

gld7KjUz_qK3mnp8-FcW2MlNimGztuI-O7FQTBqn0Gw

BUTCH: Not like the other girls debuted as a public art project in transit shelters around Vancouver, Canada, in March 2013, with a simultaneous gallery show at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre (The Cultch). According to Cultch administrators, the opening night – which attracted over 500 patrons – was the largest art opening in their 35 years of operation. The project went viral on the internet, leading to touring exhibitions across the continent. The exhibition catalogue was released by Shooting Gallery Publications in Spring 2014, and is available at bookstores in Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

“We are very excited to bring Butch: Not like the other girls to the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives,” says CLGA vice president William Craddock. “SD Holman’s photographs document, explore and celebrate a myriad of sexual identities and gender expression – visibility that is important to the richness of our communities today and the diversity of our histories for the future. We hope that Toronto audiences will enjoy this exhibition as much as it has been revered at its debut in Vancouver.”

BUTCH is a photographic exploration of the liminal spaces occupied by female masculinity in contemporary queer communities. Holman delineates Butch as “an inclusive site of resistance to limitations on the way women, gender, and sexuality are still defined.” The images honour the beauty, power and diversity of women who transgress the gender binary, with subjects reflecting the many sizes, shapes, ethnicities, and styles of Butch. The transversal dialectic of female masculinity is celebrated here — unapologetic and undiluted.

BUTCH: Not like the other girls opens on Thursday, November 6, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. with a public wine and cheese reception. The Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives is located at 34 Isabella Street in Toronto.

Toys“R”Us, Canada provides seriously ill Toronto child with an “all-you-can-snag” experience of a lifetime

Canada’s leading toy and juvenile retailer continues support of Starlight Children’s Foundation™ Canada’s programming to brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families.

Toronto, ON (October 2, 2014)- On October 29, 2014, a Toronto-based Starlight child will participate in a 3-Minute Dash through the Toys“R”Us store at Sherway Gardens (690 Evans Ave)to snatch as much merchandise as possible within a three minute timeframe.

The 3-Minute Dash is donated by Toys“R”Us as part of their longstanding partnership with Starlight Canada and will take place in five cities across Canada: Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver. Participants were randomly selected from each province as part of a contest Starlight Canada held earlier this month. Applicants were asked to share the details of their care journey and submit them to their local Starlight programs coordinator for entry.

Unique to the Toronto 3-Minute Dash, Starlight child Colena, who was randomly selected through contest for this Dash, has requested to share her special opportunity with three other local seriously ill Starlight children. Colena explained her belief lies in the Plato quote, “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle.”

“Toys“R”Us, Canada’s ongoing commitment to our in and out-of-hospital programming is invaluable to Starlight,” says Starlight executive director, Brian Bringolf. “Special events like the 3-Minute Dash provide Starlight children with a chance to create much-needed positive memories away from the hospital, treatments and therapies.”

“Children have always been the focus of our charity work and Starlight continues to be a great partner for us as together, we share the goal of brightening the lives of seriously ill children when they need a reason to smile” says Kevin Macnab, President, Toys“R”Us Canada.  “Providing the Starlight children with an empty cart, and full reign of a Toys“R”Us store for 3 minutes, is the perfect escape from their hospital stay, as they race through the aisles and experience a fun and unique opportunity that they will never forget.  After events like these, it’s the joy on the children’s faces that motivate our employees to continue to raise funds and awareness for Starlight and towards making a difference in children’s lives.”

During the 16 year partnership, Toys“R”Us, Canada has raised over $12 million dollars for Starlight Canada. This year, in addition to the 3-Minute Dash, Toys“R”Us, Canada has helped to sponsor:

  • 101 Hospital Grants (Montetary funding to support distractive entertainment for hospitalized children)
  • 10,500 ER Admit Kits (A variety of care products for children and parents during unexpected hospital stays)
  • 7,000 Baby & Toddler Fun Kits (Cuddly toys and games to distract very young children during unpleasant hospital stays)
  • 10 Fun Centers (Mobile entertainment units featuring a Sharp AQUOS flat-screen television, a DVD player, a Nintendo Wii™ gaming system and a wide variety of Wii games)
  • $150,000 in Great Escapes Sponsorships (A program that provides Starlight families with a chance to enjoy fun events together to create priceless memories, relax and then return home with a renewed sense of strength and hope)
  • 100 Starlight Treasure Chests (A box filled with toys and surprises, used by children during appointments at the hospital or clinic)

Our Early 2014 Halloween Costume Predictions [Revisited]

About a month ago, we shared our predictions on what the most popular Halloween costumes would be this year. After talking it over with a few people and a little more brainstorming (and of course a few pop-culture blunders) we’ve come up with a few more costumes we can expect to see this year. We hope you’re all getting just as excited as we are!

Hopefully you aren’t as unwanted at the Halloween party as U2 was in our iTunes libraries.

2. Captain America

Who doesn’t love a good superhero costume? The movie Captain America is the perfect costume inspiration for anyone; with other characters including Black Widow, Nick Fury, Quicksilver and Peggy Carter.

3. The 3 Breasted-Woman

This costume will be as shocking and confusing as the story itself.

4. Frozen

This 2013 film has topped the list of highest-grossing animated films, so it’s no surprise people are still talking about it. Just because it’s a kids film, doesn’t mean people aren’t going to sexy-up these characters, MTV has shared some costumes to heat up Halloween with a frozen getup.

5. The Fappening

Please don’t go out naked. But with the celebrity nude leaks being such a huge story it’s bound to show up as a Halloween costume. But with a few props, prints and perhaps a nude body suit it could be a great play on an interesting celeb-crisis.

Let us know what 2014-inspired Halloween costumes you expect to see this year, better-yet, what you plan on dressing up as? #TrickOrTreat
