How To Hustle Through The Holidays: Getting Away With Working Through Family Time
03 Dec 2012/0 Comments/in Embrace Disruption Blog /by Embrace Disruption PRPicture this: chestnuts roasting on an open fire, jack frost playing on TV – family enjoying a bottle of wine, and you with your laptop pushing keys. Not exactly how the time-tested carol was written, but it’s our firm belief that it’s time for a re-write. Let’s start this off properly: no one should feel obligation to work over the holidays, but let’s face it – some of us need to (or might even welcome the distraction). We’ve put together 5 tips to help you manage your family/work ratio to get through the holiday season.
Start early
If you know work is going to be required during your time off, set yourself up for success. There’s always ways to prep yourself, whether it’s to-do lists, or preliminary email drafting – doing this will help you keep your head above water.
Map out your days
If you’re headed to engagements and dinners, try to set aside a dedicated time in the morning to accomplish your tasks. If you take a couple of hours at the start of your day – you can successfully relax and enjoy the duration (with the help of your smartphone).
Schedule your social
No one wants to spend their holidays looking for content to tweet or writing blog posts – make sure to plan ahead by crafting a few posts, scheduling a few tweets, and using your smart phone for reactive social networking. Trust us, this will be a lifesaver, and will help relieve that sense of obligation.
Buy your gifts online
Something that will save you SO much time. Try checking out sites like Amazon or Well.ca to get something for each of the people on your list. You can even have everything gift wrapped, so the items arrive at your door ready to give away.
Remember to have perspective
Your work will never be done, regardless of how much you have on your plate. Take into perspective what’s really important – and seize the time you have with your family. Work will always be there when you get back to it, so fulfill obligations to clients or customers – and put the rest on hold. You (and your family) deserve it.
Happy holidays!
Film Friday: Will.i.am & Britney Spears Scream and Shout…. “Product Placement”
30 Nov 2012/2 Comments/in Embrace Disruption Blog /by Embrace Disruption PRIt’s no secret that music videos these days are saturated with product placement. It’s also not a wonder this practise is so popular, considering album sales aren’t what they used to be. Sure, iTunes remains a huge source of income for artists – but other than that, it’s left up to touring to get the large sums of money pouring in. This explains the surge of product placement fuelling the swollen costs of making posh and glamorous music videos for an artist’s single promotion. Now: it’s time to play a little game. Watch the new video for Will.i.am and Britney Spears’ single: Scream and Shout. Tell us in the comments which products you spot, and if this placement really makes you want to buy that item – this should get interesting!
The Technology Apple (Gasp!) Stole
28 Nov 2012/1 Comment/in Embrace Disruption Blog /by Embrace Disruption PRIt’s no secret that we’re huge advocates of Apple Inc. From our iPhones to our MacBook Pros, we’re completely addicted, and not ashamed to admit it. Infact, if the office caught on fire – we wouldn’t be scrambling for our monthly receipts and invoices (don’t tell our accountant!), we’d be scooping up our computer, phone, and making a dash for it. This is why it came as a bit of a shock to realize just how many things Apple (ahem) borrowed from other companies and creators. Have a look at the INFOGRAPHIC below for more juicy details on exactly where some of our favourite technology came from:
The Best Social Media Advice For 2013
27 Nov 2012/0 Comments/in Embrace Disruption Blog /by Embrace Disruption PR
If you need some guidance, I have you covered. I asked 12 of the top thought leaders in social media to provide you with the support you need to develop a social media strategy that will help make 2013 a breakout year for you and your organization.
Before you lock in your plans for 2013, reflect on the tips below and incorporate them into your game plan:
1. ”My #1 tip: Read. A lot. Spend the majority of your time reading. Everything. Books, blogs, magazines, newspapers, everything. Read content out of your sphere of interest and read content that drills down into areas you are very passionate about. Reading inspires creativity and helps me create content.” — Mitch Joel, president of Twist Image
2. ”Think of social inside the job of every functional leader. Explore ways to involve the audience into the contact points you make with prospects and customers. By doing so you are on a path for the future where ‘social’ will just be the way everyone does their job.” — Sam Decker, CEO of Mass Relevance
3. ”Get to know your customers and make it all and always about them. Whether you use social media to deliver service, enlist help, or share something spectacular, make what you share about how it benefits the people you want to move to action.” — Liz Strauss, founder of Inside Out Thinking
4. ”My tip for social media marketers, and for marketers in general, is simply this: focus on serving your customers and prospects. When you do that you’re relevant. And add value. Everything else flows from that.” — Shelly Kramer, CEO of V3 Integrated Marketing
5. ”Integrate. We’ve got to stop looking at social media in a silo. Leverage your other communications channels to drive your customers to more deep connection points (social media) and leverage your social communications to support the other channels (point to deals, advertisements, promotions, etc.). A healthy mix of the two—engagement and calls-to-action—and integrating social as the close-to-the-bone connection point will help us be more integrated in our approach to social.” — Jason Falls, CEO of Social Media Explorer
6. ”My number one tip would be to begin focusing on developments with big data and analytics. We need to begin to turn our attention toward distilling wisdom and marketing insight from the vast amounts of information coming at us from our social media activities. Those who master this and can react quickly will create competitive advantage.” — Mark Schaefer, author of “Return On Influence”
7. ”Define your goals (or your client’s) for social media and make sure that you are measuring your results to ensure that you are meeting those goals. When set up properly, Google Analytics can track goal completions (such as purchases, mailing list sign ups, etc.) and associate them to their referral traffic sources, including social media networks. There are also lots of tools to track follower/fan growth, engagement, and much more on the top networks. Do some research, find the right tools, and ensure that you’re spending your time and money wisely.” — Kristi Hines, blogger at Social Media Examiner
8. ”#1 – Get better at email marketing. I know that may sound funny for a social media tip, but integrating content, email, social, SEO and PPC is my number one tip for getting more from social media in 2013.” — John Jantsch, author of “Duct Tape Marketing”
9. ”My number one tip for social media marketers is to pay attention to blogging, and make it your primary focus. Content marketing is not only the new buzzword, it’s the new focus of everything. People are consuming content at a crazy rate, and content curation seems to be all the rage, with everyone pinning, reblogging, and Tumbling.
“But who’s creating all that content? When you look at the entire scope of Internet users, there aren’t that many people who are creating consistent, high-quality, well-written, interesting content. There are people who slap things together once in a while, and there are people who write good stuff, but only rarely.
“The social media marketer who focuses on creating a lot of intelligent content that people can easily consume on mobile phones and tablets are going to ultimately win the social media marketing game.” — Erik Deckers, co-author of “No Bullsh*t Social Media”
10. ”Nobody cares about your products and services. They care about themselves and solving problems. Your online content needs to be less egotistical and more helpful.” — David Meerman Scott, author of “The New Rules of Marketing & PR”
11. ”The #1 tip? Stop thinking about social media marketing. Marketing is an integrated, holistic set of solutions, of which social media is one important ingredient. Work closely with all of the other branches of marketing to maximize synergy and success.” — Christopher S. Penn, co-founder of PodCamp
12. ”Follow how the media is using social media. No one has innovated and iterated more than the press and it has helped their core business immensely. They have a wealth of knowledge we can benefit from.” — Steve Rubel, EVP/global strategy and insights at Edelman
Based on your industry, customers, resources and business goals, there are a plethora of ways to craft and execute your social media strategy for 2013. As with any strategy, success comes down to planning, executing, reviewing and iterating. Get started by harnessing the tips above.

How To Know To Say “No”
26 Nov 2012/1 Comment/in Embrace Disruption Blog /by Embrace Disruption PRWhether you’re an entrepreneur, or just an eager beaver – there’s many times in life where you’re faced with things you want to do, but simply can’t. It’s true, we’re all very busy people – but we tend to want to do everything for everyone. Here’s some quick tips to make sure you’re evaluating everything before committing to something you simply can’t do.
Know your limits
It’s ok if you can’t do something – quit while you’re ahead. Even simply referring someone else is all the help some need. Make sure you’re not saying yes, just because you think you have to.
Know your calendar
There’s nothing worse than double booking yourself and having to cancel last minute. Always make a habit of checking your calendar before committing. It will save you headache, and make you look better in the eyes of whomever you’re planning time with.
Trust instinct
If your gut tells you you shouldn’t commit, don’t. It’s that simple. Back-stepping is extremely hard, and you don’t want to ever portray yourself as a flaky person, who doesn’t get the job done.
Be (a little) selfish
It may really suck having to let down a loved one or friend – but guess what? It sucks more if you re-neg long after giving commitment. Weigh the pros and cons of the situation in your mind. You’ll realize that if you’re not meant to do something, it’s often reflected in the list you envision.
Check your language
Instead of saying yes to something right away, lead with “I’ll have to think about that”. Often times if you walk away from a scenario where you feel pressured, you can come back to it with a sound and objective mind.
In a world where it seems we’re always switched in “ON” position, it’s ok to step back and realize what you’re truly capable of. Doing too much often leads to burning out – and if you’re like anyone else in today’s workforce, you simply can’t afford that!

How Satan Can Remind You That Traditional Marketing Still Works
21 Nov 2012/0 Comments/in Embrace Disruption Blog /by Embrace Disruption PRWe admit it: we tend to spend a LOT of time talking about digital communications and marketing – after all, it’s our specialty. That said, there are still certain “old school” marketing methods that really do still have a lasting effect. Today, we were quickly reminded of how something so simple, yet clever can really define your business’ brand – without even booting up a computer. While between meetings, we happened by a sign outside of Toronto novelty hotspot, “The Outer Layer” (see below).
Hilarious, yes – and also extremely clever. You see, Outer Layer changes this sign regularly to reflect different quirky sayings and viewpoints directly from both their staff and product lines. To give you perspective: this is the store that offers products like Anne Taintor magnets/postcards, Kikkerland head massagers, and a variety of kitchy fun gifting options.
The real stand out here is that with signs like these, it almost begs you to come and explore what the store has to offer – while making a statement about the personality of the people and products that dwell within. In short: a fantastic way to convert foot traffic into purchasers.
Now: it simply wouldn’t be right of us to not relate this to digital marketing. It’s simple really, we all have an opportunity to create digital signs just like that of The Outer Layer. How you ask? By translating your brand in similar ways through Facebook and Twitter. It’s important to note that a clever post on a social network knows no bounds – and has potential to spread just about anywhere. So we challenge you – take a page from The Layer’s book, innovate and have fun with your brand messaging (whatever your format), it’s amazing where a little effort can take you!
